(OP) User ID: 1386905 Canada 05/22/2011 10:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Pretty nasty dude. I mean if I couldn't catch any other species and my life depended on it I'd eat one. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 68118Well, they definitely have a unpleasant texture to them, and the taste isn't really noticeably bland really but I admit there is a disgusting feeling just eating it. You know you are eating a shitty bottom feeding fish that probably has some nasty toxins and other crap in it. At least it's not off the shore of Fukushima. My opinion, this is one disgusting fish to even attempt to eat. Have to force flavor into it and it needed to be cut with soya sauce after cooking before I could even begin to like a flavor I could recognize. Not the kind of fish I would eat unless survival depended on it, but one has to try what options are available. I'll wait until the SHTF before I even consider eating another piece of this disgustingly grotesque bottom feeding garbage fish! My cats however are in for a treat! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1394847 United States 05/22/2011 10:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Where I live, this Asian carp has been taking over the river connecting two lakes. Apparently there is no limit on how many you can catch and if you don't mind the bones can be eaten. Quoting: youaredreamingI decided to balance nature out and catch a couple. Two in 30 minutes. They were pretty big, put up a bit of a fight. Took them home, cleaned them and marinated them for 30 minutes in a wine/soya/ginger/garlic/chili sauce. Then cut up fresh ginger, garlic, onions and braising them in the oven. If they taste good enough, I will save some money on meat and eat more muddy carp, mind you I can catch some other fish there like fresh water salmon and rainbow trout. When the SHTF I know I can at least eat grubby carp now. +1 survival skill. That's the nastiest thing I've heard all day. Carp eat other fish's shit..that's right, feces...so if you don't mind eating shit, dig right in. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1312516They were fairly big, probably close to two pounds. A worm and corn. Fun to catch but would really need to be desperate to eat them, not my kind of fish when I know far taster fish are out there also. Had a nice rainbow trout last week and it was awesome. |

My roomate likes it... he's a bad ass when it comes to eating shitty foods. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 983877He's talking about asian carp, which aren't bottom feeders. They eat plankton, algae, insects, and they are a clean fish, very tasty and sought after in asia. Many people just assume any CARP is dirty nasty fish but this is not the case. Carp don't eat poo. They eat plankton, algae, aquatic vegitation and grasses, insects and insect larvae, and mussels. |

That's the other problem, high probability the fish have worms although cooking the crap out of them will kill anything parasitic. You are still likely eating some worm in the meat even if it's dead and that's a gross thought. However, this was a survival test more then anything. I am testing certain area for edible plants and foods in my local area. Want to be more aware of what options are there if everything goes tits up. |

It still wasn't something that I am used to flavor wise, and these are Asian carp for sure, so not the other type that we can catch here which are the grey bottom feeders that I would never eat to save my life. I really didn't like this fish much but that also could be texture and recipe. That said, it's on my survival list now just in case. It's an easy to catch food source here thanks to the take over. |

[link to en.wikipedia.org] Cyprinus carpio carpio is the species I caught, found a picture of it on that wiki and it certainly eats what he says. Lots of damn bones, have to descale and white soft flesh. Probably really need a better recipe the one I tried is not convincing me of any future efforts to experiment. |

It benefits greatly from brining overnight if it is from a muddy waterway. This is a general hint for any fish from muddy or silty water. |
