You would never get away with that over here. I was checking out frozen turkeys in one of our groceries stores, I can't remember the size of them, but the smaller one was $40, and the bigger one was over $60. |

A 12 pound Turkey here is about $26.00 and that is with a store coupon and additional $20.00 purchase. Quoting: spiritnut What state are you in?? That's crazy! I just bought a turkey for 12.00 from Walmart in West Virginia it was 18 pounds. Giant Eagle has them for .39 cents a pound in Maryland, Weis' has a sale for the same thing starting next week in Maryland. |

Wait until it's closer to Thanksgiving to purchase your turkey. The stores will offer special prices. Also, if you have a big family don't purchase a turkey less than 15 lbs. You have to figure 10 lbs of the turkey is going to be waste/bones. Butterball turkeys (more breast) will probably be the most expensive. Buy a Reynolds Turkey Baking Bag. Makes the turkey incredibly moist and cuts the baking time in half or more and you won't have to baste the bird everyone half hour or so. I have used these Turkey Baking Bags for years and they do a really great job. The bag will hold a turkey up to 25 pounds. Turkeys are going for $.89-$1.00/lbs. here in Colorado. Op's thread has some very good ideas. Bon Appetite, everyone. The Cootess |

While I appreciate the OP's post, and certainly some people will benefit from the ideas, canned food and boxed stuffing is not for me. If I had only $30, I would plan something like this: Turkey - 12 lbs = $12.00 Gravy: Chicken Broth = $0.50 Flour = $0.25 Turkey drippings = free Stuffing: Loaf of bread = $1.00 Celery = $1.00 Onions = $1.00 Butter = $1.00 Chicken Broth = $0.50 Mashed Potatoes: Bag of potatoes = $2.50 Butter = $1.00 Beans and Carrots: Carrots = $1.00 Beans = $1.00 Butter = $1.00 Dinner Rolls - $1.00 Pumpkin Pie: Store bought = $4.00 or might be able to make one for less Total = $28.75 |

Our local Hy-Vee chain stores had a special this last week: buy a Hormel boneless ham (about 6.5 lbs for $19) and get a turkey (10-14 lbs) free. The meat counter will also slice that ham free of charge. Needless to say, I've done that. Twice, as it happens. We have a chain of discount stores here called Grocery Outlet, of which I am becoming more and more fond. The last couple of years they made their sale flyer be something very similar to what you suggest, they had a menu and the prices of the ingredients and the total, and recipes for each dish. I thought it was very helpful and sensible that they did that, the total price was right around what you came up with. Holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas are a good reason to keep a well stocked pantry year round, it cushions the blow of having to shop for special occasion food if you pick some up from time to time on sale or when you have a little extra money, then you don't have to go out and buy everything all at once that same week. Makes it easier to have guests anytime. |

All prices quoted above are “sale” prices (the cost of the foods when they are on special). The prices above do not reflect the additional savings from using coupons. Happy Thanksgiving a little early! Thank you for posting this advice, and for thinking of those with less money. It might also be helpful if families could join together for the meal - everybody provide something so that no one family or cook has to do or pay for everything. Maybe a couple of families could do it together. We need to develop a more communal sense in this country, rugged individuals usually end up dead and being eaten by their pets. A karma point for your kindness! Happy Thanksgiving! |

I've never seen them all sold out, so no problem. We're going to a friend's house for Thanksgiving, so I haven't checked the prices this year. The best way I've ever found to do turkey is to clean and dry it, brush it with melted real butter, and roast it unstuffed in my rotisserie. Lovely crispy brown skin that seals in all the juices. If I remember correctly it only takes two and a half hours for a 12 pound bird (I always have to doublecheck the instructions...lol). We actually get to eat on time. |

I'll be cooking for between 6 and 10 this year. While I do the gravy, sweet potatoes, bread, and pie all from scratch, the kids LOVE stove top stuffing and green bean casserole made with all the unhealthy ingredients! Since it's only once or twice a year, I don't mind. Have a wonderful, blessed Thanksgiving this year, even our friends who don't celebrate Turkey-day! edit: TY for the turkey roasting bag tip, Cootess. Gonna definitely try that this year! Great post OP. We usually wait until they go on major sell (turkeys) last year we bought 8 total and they were 3 bucks each. (it's a last minute purchase but well worth it. We end up feeding well over 200 people throughout thanksgiving and Christmas. If you prepare all year you can certainly have a wonderful spread for very cheap. This year we froze about 8 bushels of butter beans and although they aren't the traditional green we will be using those. Home made cranberry sauce Home made rolls ( most people have all the ingredients at home already) Mashed taters Gravy (homemade) The stuffing that I'm giving away this year is cornbread stuffing, I bought a bunch of jiffy mix cornbread on sale and will make that for the stuffing. Ours here will be the traditional I make every year. I make the broth out of the neck and gizzards from the turkey. Stuffing is super simple and cheap! And a HUGE batch of Mac and cheese. We probably won't have our meal on thanksgiving since we tend to be really busy with the other meals but I would rather spend my time doing that than packing on the pounds. Most importantly, remember it isn't the spread you put out that determines your thankfulness. :) Oldmotherhubbardglp (at) live.com ~mistakes are proof that you are trying~ ~be kind to unkind people, for they are the ones that need it the most~ |

Happy Thanksgiving a little early! leave off the stove top stuffing and buy day old type breads on sale will save some money. Make the cranberry sauce because most brands have high fructose corn syrup. Make the pumpkin pie, that tiny little sara lee one will not serve 10 anybody. misfigured. have each family coming bring some of the meal. spread it around. Pot lucks are fun anyway. Make your own candied yams minus all that fructose for less to, for god' sake people, learn to cook. and your math is wrong on the spuds, but at least you have them homemade. Scrub well and don't peel for maximum taste and nutrition. any sara lee pie for 2.29 even on sale is poison. You can make a really huge homeade pumpkin pie that will serve that many people with the large can of pumpkin, and normal size pie pans. You do own pie pans to MAKE pies, right? Again let people bring some of that food. and you serve JUICE with all the other carbs in the meal why? Iced water would be better. If you are using 2 cans of those AWFUL terrible canned yams, your math is off. Also learn to make real gravy from the drippings of the bird, which is far better than the canned SHIT and only costs a bit of flour. |
