It was a deep, philosphical statement about the existential fact that people - whoever they are - force you by their very existence in your consciousness to exist for them, i.e., to become an object to yourself, thus denying you the freedom to be yourself. Insomuch as hell represents the state of imprisonment or loss of freedom, the very existence of others destroys your freedom to choose or define your being. Hence other people are hell.
