I often thought the same thing myself and it really doesn't make sense.

People are followers, and followers are stupid (and gutless) by nature.

People will follow the alpha male, or group with the most authority. They align with whomever potentially benefits them the most.

They do not want to make sense, they just want to stay alive and will sell their souls, and give up their minds, to do so.
