NY Times: Strict Gun Laws in Chicago Can’t Stem Fatal Shots
CHICAGO — Not a single gun shop can be found in this city because they are outlawed. Handguns were banned in Chicago for decades, too, until 2010, when the United States Supreme Court ruled that was going too far, leading city leaders to settle for restrictions some describe as the closest they could get legally to a ban without a ban. Despite a continuing legal fight, Illinois remains the only state in the nation with no provision to let private citizens carry guns in public.

And yet Chicago, a city with no civilian gun ranges and bans on both assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, finds itself laboring to stem a flood of gun violence that contributed to more than 500 homicides last year and at least 40 killings already in 2013, including a fatal shooting of a 15-year-old girl on Tuesday.

To gun rights advocates, the city provides stark evidence that even some of the toughest restrictions fail to make places safer. “The gun laws in Chicago only restrict the law-abiding citizens and they’ve essentially made the citizens prey,” said Richard A. Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association. To gun control proponents, the struggles here underscore the opposite — a need for strict, uniform national gun laws to eliminate the current patchwork of state and local rules that allow guns to flow into this city from outside.

It's almost funny, that they actually BELIEVE that they would obey those new laws when they won't obey the old ones.

I dunno, I'm sure there are some useful idiots that actually think they can create some type of utopia if only guns were gone...but you're right, it's about keeping them in power so they can HAVE the power.

Good post, I dont understand people who think no guns = no gun murder they set out to take someones life that itself is highly against the law and very wrong so what makes people think a gun being banned will stop it? drugs are banned and many people still use them.

You'd have thought that with a magnificent black man in office, things would have changed, and all the criminals would become honest, law abiding and productive citizens.

So sad.

I think we're way overdue for a law against killing people. If only there was a law against crime the US would be a wonderful place

Re: NY Times: Strict Gun Laws in Chicago Can’t Stem Fatal Shots
I live in the burbs of Chicago. Most of the gun deaths are criminals killing criminals so there's no big deal there and probably an overall benefit. There are innocents caught in the cross-fire quite often and that is tragic. But if you could get stats on how many worthwhile humans were killed by guns, the numbers wouldn't be nearly as dramatic.

The problem here is long-running and well known to the nation...greedy, corrupt sociopaths run the city and state (that pig George Ryan was just released from prison today) and this breeds a lack of respect for order with the population. Chicago is packed full of gangstas, but also mafia from all corners of the world. They can operate with impunity here because all they have to do is grease the palms of the politicians and cops. And from there, the hilarity ensues. Anyone with means has ditched the city. And the rest of the state is ruled by the voting decisions of the dregs inhabiting Chicago who want to keep the corrupt elements in place.

We have $100B in unfunded pension obligations, credit rating downgrade, retards and criminals running the state, criminals and sociopaths in Chicago determining election results for the state-wide races. Illinois is fucked. Harsh gun laws/lax gun laws, would not change what ails this putrid state. But it is fun to see them use this hellhole as an example as to why gun control laws don't work. Nice to see the state contributing something of use to the cause.

On a grander scale, Gun control won't work because of mexico and Canada.

That being said, there's the actual question of "against tyranny," which renders the above moot anyways.
