Will my Feral Cat forgive me? =( He seems mad/sad at me. I took his Bird away from him.
I went outside at 11PM to get the newspaper and I see my Feral Cat that Ive been feeding since it was a lil kitten. I got him fixed and all that too. Next to him was what I thought was a toad or something... Now keep in mind, hes a Feral Cat and he wont let me even get close to 5 ft of him without him running away...

This time, I walked up to him with a flash light, and there he was, laying down on my drive way with his legs stretched and next to him was a freaking BIRD! I thought it was dead, but as I shined the light to my Feral Cats face, he had this look of showing off. That look made me chuckle lol.

So I went to the front yard to grab the newspaper and as Im walking back to my garage, I hear the bird sweeking for its life, you know like, making that bird noise. I was like WTF! And my Feral Cat was chasing it around as he was hitting it with his claws. I realized that the bird had a broken wing and my Feral Cat was just toying with it. I then instantly remembered how Cats like to play with their catch which means their catch will die a horrible long suffering death...

I felt so bad thinking about that, and as I got inside the house and looked out the window, that bird kept sweeking for help or something, and I see them in the middle of the road where theres traffic and I was like oh shit, they are both going to get killed.

So I rushed to put on some gloves and dashed outside to grab the bird - My Feral Cat ran away as I got too close, and as soon as I picked up the Bird and walked back, my feral cat followed me. The bird is now in a cat trap with some water inside.

I dont know what the hell Im going to do with this bird. I know he wont survive if I release him in the park. On top of that, I see my Feral Cat and he wont even LOOK AT ME! I pour food on the ground and he wont come up to eat like he always does. Its like Im not even here!

Im counting of Cats having a low attention span and forgetting about this whole incident in some weeks. Do you think he will forgive me or better yet, forget? When I saw him with that bird, he looked up at me like he was so proud!

Get a popsicle stick or something like that and some roll bandage and wrap it around the wing and the bird's body so it is stable while the bone is healing.

Don't listen to me... watch the video :)

No, you need to give it to a professional, don't do it yourself. If you had a broken arm, would you want some random person playing doctor on you? Plus, it's illegal to mess with wildlife if you don't have a license. Most rehab facilities take animals for free.

The cat will forgive you, just keep on feeding him.
And send the bird to a vet or some local wildlife authorities.

Cats will often bring home dead animals to "contribute to the welfare of the family."

They expect, and should be praised for the gift/assistance.

-or-

He could just be PO'ed you took his toy away.

I have saved broken winged birds as well.. (independent of cats)

birds bones are hollow and filled with air.

be prepared to care for it, and keeps it's wings bound (tough to bind just one), for AT LEAST 2 months while the bone heals

ace bandages works well

give the cat a can of wet cat food, and a teaspoon of cat nip in a paper plate. Also buy one of those electronic stuffed toy birds that chirp when it is batted - they are made for cats. Give all this to the cat early tomorrow.

Dear Ferral Kitties need to hunt. Their lives depend on those skill being highly developed. When they are fond of a trusted human, they may bring their prey for you to share it (in order to feed you as they would any member of their pride. This is a very great honor that has been bestoweed upon you.

While you may be expected to "consume" the bird, you must replace it with something nice to eat as well. This poor creature may have been loving you enough to give you food that was vital for it's survival. Cats will bring a human companion food and do without themselves to the point of starvation if they sense the human is in need of nourishment. They can be amazingly self-sacrificing and quite nobel in this way.

If you accept these precious gifts 1: make fuss over it. A great deal of complimenting him or er on the fine specimen and reassure the cat how much you will enjoy it - you are sure.

2.: that day or the next day, be certain to replace it with a nice fish from the fish market or a large bowl of meats and sweetbreads (preferable not cooked too much, if at all) or some cottage cheese or creme or both.

3. Also try to give your cat friend things that he/she could not easily catch such as raw fish, or creme. But be generous with the quantity and make sure they understand it is for them and for no one else. This can be tricky if there are other feral cats around.

Just be aware that when you accept this gift of food you may be taking the last food the cat may hunt and kill or find for days or weeks if they feel you need it or they feel a great deal of love for you.

Do not let them down. Replace it immediately and be generous in your replacement gift. Make sure the baby cat does not go hungry because of their love for you.

Since you don't seem to be very knowledgable about the anatomy, here's a little snippet from Wikipedia:

Birds have many bones that are hollow (pneumatized) with criss-crossing struts or trusses for structural strength. The number of hollow bones varies among species, though large gliding and soaring birds tend to have the most. Respiratory air sacs often form air pockets within the semi-hollow bones of the bird's skeleton.

You do-gooder feral cat feeders are the cause of most native song bird deaths in this country.

You are the cause.

YOU.

Thinking you are all noble and charitable.

You are the opposite. You support an invasive, non-native predatory species that is destroying our fragile populations of birds.

Cats are the only species -- besides human'kind' -- that tortures its prey with no intention of eating it.

Ever see a cat pull the living intestines out of a baby robin, then leave it there to die? Funtime is over for kitteh. Bird dies in agony, guts exposed the the sun and the ants.

YOU caused the pain and suffering of that bird. YOU. The cat is just a tool, a playtoy for you to make believe you are somehow kind to animals.

But YOU are the cause of endless suffering and destruction.

Now do the decent thing and haul "your" feral cat off to the animal shelter, before he tortures and kills. Again. And again.

The blood, the agony, the destruction and the souls of countless native songbirds is on YOUR hands.

Splint the bird's wing or it will never fly again.
 Quoting: A Friend

An average person has zero idea how to splint a bird's wing.

Most attempts only prolong the agony.

The OP should take the bird to a veterinarian or liscensed wildlife rehab center immediately.

In fact, probably the truth of the matter is that the clueless OP should simply take a hammer and crush the bird's skull now to put it out of its misery.

But EWWW!!! YUCK!!! then she'd get blood on her hands.

Newsflash: The blood is already on her hands.

Feral cats are the immediate, physical cause of agony and destruction.

The the delussional do-gooders who feed them are the real cause.

Please do take the bird to a wildlife facility asap. It needs antibiotics, not just a splint (cats carry pasteurella which can kill a bird very quickly.) Wing splints are tricky -- and I say this with 8 years of avian rehab experience under my belt.

Your cat was just being a cat -- it'll forgive you, even if you weren't as impressed with its gift as it might have hoped.

No.

Simply one who enjoys native songbirds in the wild.

Domestic cats are not native to the western hemisphere. They are an introduced species of predator.

Bird populations adapted over the years to survive alongside native predators, such as possums and raccoons.

Native songbird populations are dwindling.

The overwhelming major cause of songbird population decrease is predation by cats.

Cats not only kill to eat. They kill for amusement. They torture birds, and leave them to die.

By supporting, protecting and subsidising this feral cat, the OP is deluding herself into thinking how 'nice' she is to animals.

The responsible action to preserve native wildlife is to humanely euthanise feral cats and take them out of the equation.

What makes a bird's life more worthwhile than a cat's life? Don't both deserve to live?

Just because one is a native species, and one non-native, I don't see that one is more valuable than the other.

There are far worse things to do than taking care of a cat who is in need.

The cat is a killing machine that can wipe out hundreds of birds in its lifetime.

So it's not a one-to-one equation.

Once feral cat = hundreds of deaths by torture.

Cats breed like crazy, but songbirds not so much.

Many, many songbird populations are in steep decline and may never recover. Predation by cats is the primary cause.

Cats destroy whole species of birds.

While there might concievably be worse things in the world than feeding a feral cat, I am hard pressed to think of anything else that rises the the sheer level of emotion-over-reason sentimentality that causes so much destruction all the while allowing the person to think she is somehow doing something that is good or kind.
