Isaiah 17 is very clear that Damascus will be destroyed. It hasn't happened yet, so if you believe in the clear prophecies of the Bible (I do) it must be a future event.

The use of WMDs in the form of chemical weapons) is a new level threat to everyone involved and whether it's Assad or the rebels it doesn't matter. Setting that precedent of willingness to use WMD even on their own people suggests they would not hesitate to do so against their enemies. If they try that on Israel, Damascus could be leveled by Israel in short order. Also, now that the US is openly offering to arm and aid the rebels and Russia is backing Assad, the proxy war could result in either the rebels or Assad blowing up the city themselves.

Isaiah 17 says it will be reduced to a pile of rubble and uninhabited. That suggests more than just chemical or radiolocigcal agents by themselves and conventional explosions would not be enough to turn the entire city to rubble. Major destruction is going to happen there at some point.
