Things went along just fine without the computer wrapping its electronic Boa Constrictor body around our minds and throats. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42026975 Are you that dense? Yeah, who needs things like modern medicine.. damn technology. But seriously. Wall-Street is already run by computers, those who have the most knowledge of computers and programming will have all of the money in the future. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 22959707 United States 07/03/2013 03:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I had a engineering degree.. was in construction, hated it. Picked up a quick associates in programming/analyst but finished it when the market was at the worst. I was told that so many fresh I.T programmers where flooding the market that entry level jobs where scarce.. the next level or experienced group where the ones like you.. always able to find jobs easy.. in any economic situation. well a couple years have gone by now and I'm thinking getting back in to it now.. any advice? i interview horribly btw and as far as IT background all i have is the associates degree but I took a lot of web development classes. C#, VB, Javascript, ASP.NET, SQL and b/c i had the time i took many web designer type classes but learned i was not very good at graphics. |

Despite all that, I don't consider myself "elite", and I think I never will. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22959707 I had a engineering degree.. was in construction, hated it. I went to school myself, DeVry University, and got a degree in CIS (computer information systems). I'm not sure about the "market being flooded," not even with entry level workers - at least not here in Phoenix, AZ where I am. I would suggest that if you want to get into it, maybe see if you can't apply some of the credits you got for your AA to a bachelor's degree in some kind of development...? Tough to get anything in the field without a bachelor's these days :/ Best of luck. "It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to speak up, and remove all doubt." ~ Abraham Lincoln |

Quoting: MaybeTrollingU I'm not necessarily saying that we will see ourselves, or even been seen as being "elite" - maybe the real word I was looking for was "indispensable"...? Ok, fill disclosure - I see a Matrix-style world where AI has taken over, but doesn't (for whatever reason) have the full capacity to maintain its own codebase, so we programmers become like "the chosen ones" of the robotic overlords, highly valued, watched over and protected - oh, and showered with wealth and privilege too, of course. Did I just say all that? Doh! LOL! "It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to speak up, and remove all doubt." ~ Abraham Lincoln |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1165448 United States 07/03/2013 05:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | First a disclaimer - I am one, a computer programmer. And it seems that in the time I have been in this profession, we have become more and more highly valued. Even in the worst of economic times, I have never had trouble finding a job. Quoting: QuantumKev This, along with a slightly over-active imagination and some wishful thinking has caused me to wonder if, in the not-too-distant future, computer programmers might be like the rock stars and pro athletes of today? Here in the US, the shortage of qualified programmers is only expected to worsen, while the demand for and reliance upon software and web programming continues to escalate. Now of course, this will all be moot if there is some catastrophic, technology killing event, like another Carrington Event, EMP attack, or something of the like. But saying something like that doesn't happen - is there a chance that, in time, people like me - the nerds who have been hidden away in cubes like hermits and kept from public view - will be part of a new class of "elite," as all those who depend upon the bits and bytes for their livelihoods turn to us to keep their constructs alive? Hell you guys can't even troubleshoot a broken mouse. You will be the bitches of the true elite - network and server guys :) Your spot will be right below the semi-bithes called the help desk monkeys. |

With quantum processors, AI will be so advanced that even we will be disposable, the AI itself will make the necessary(if any) programming into the machines. |
