My brother in law had fingernails like Rourke's, and he died from a massive heart attack while he was in his early 40's. My brother in law was in (what appeared to be excellent physical health at the time) was in good spirits and laughing one minute, and less than 15 minutes later, he was dead. The autopsy showed that he had "silent" heart attacks before - there were scars on his heart from the previous one - and his coronary looked like those of an 80 year old man. I'm surprised Mickey Rourke has lived this long. |

Very roughly: "The mountains stretched across, like a patient etherized upon a table" I knew his son who had a liver transplant at about 33 yrs..didn't make it. :( Last Edited by DawaSatso on 07/08/2013 05:58 PM |

Rumble Fish is my favorite and Barfly (life of Chas Bukowski) an interpretive fail. His face was messed up by boxing and plastic surgery devastating. His views on world events is stone ignorant..but that's ok, his bidness. Couldn't see his nails that clearly, are those 'club nails' is that what everybody's referring to? I've seen those only once on a person that got my attention: problem drinker. |

Heathcliff, M.D. User ID: 47657185 United States 11/30/2013 01:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | There is one other explanation for the clubbed nails/fingers: boxing. Rourke was involved in boxing from a young age (11, I think from his bios) and hand trauma can also cause clubbed nails/fingers. I have six fingers that were broken numerous times, in fights, and all of them have become clubbed. Mickey's nails might also indicate a serious heart condition that he has probably had his entire life. I suspect a heart murmur or perhaps a similar issue, if that is the case. If you look closely at his earliest films, his fingernails were the same there as well. And in his earliest films his chest was somewhat concave which sometimes indicates a tendency toward mitro valve prolapse. As for his face, well, speaking as a doctor, (I'm not a plastic surgeon but I did go to UCLA Med and I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night) I can see the damage from the boxing - he went to the wrong guy. Simple as that bad. It was a botched surgery job and I hope he sued the pants off the f'in quack. We don't need doctors like that in the medical field. Mickey's face is a textbook example of what happens when you go to someone based on price, rather than skill level. He probably didn't have the right money or insurance at the time for a proper job. Another thing you guys need to understand about his surgeries: he had had cheek implants early in his acting career - those implants were either removed (leading to excess skin/scar tissue built up around the bones) or they were destroyed in the ring. This alone, would have led to some serious complications for any surgeries he would have later. His nose is mush - he has stated, and it's documented that it was broken 3-5 times (depending on what you're reading.) So let's not go all Oprah on the poor guy. He's had enough problems and I suspect the rest of us have our crosses to bear as well. For the record: clubbed do NOT indicate substance abuse -- rather, substance abuse leads to heart damage, which in turn causes the clubbed fingers/nails. Please educate yourselves before throwing stones at a guy who has been through the f'in ringer. |

Heathcliff, M.D. User ID: 47657185 United States 11/30/2013 01:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | He might be queer. I don't know and don't care. But I did want to mention one last thing: somewhere else, someone mentioned something about the swollen faces of Stallone and Rourke --- there's something a lot of us men should start facing up to: old age and water retention. Guys who work out a lot, at their age, tend to develop various kinds of edema, water retention, etc and it usually starts in the face. There are medications to help counteract this, but in general, the only real help for it, is to exercise more moderately, and less strenuously, and to eat right, and stop drinking/eating anything that has any sodium in it. Juices, and a lot of the protein powders and all that sh** they push on the health market has so many bad chemicals in it, that it can cause this kind of symptom (and many others.) The best diet is fresh fruit, vegetables, meats in moderation, and no salt, no sugar, with water as your "drink of choice". Some have proposed steriod abuse and HGH as the reason for this and I'm not discounting it - it's entirely possible. I do hope not - HGH and Steriods, used in this manner are heart attacks waiting to happen. They also lead to other problems like erectile dysfunction and they can contribute to gall bladder disease as well as kidney disease. I really hope these guys, or at least their TRAINERS, are smart enough to stay away from this crap. And by the way, not all steriods are "bad" or in the same class as sports enhancing types. Some are mild and are used as simple anti-inflammatories which can be very helpful for athletes (and ordinary people suffering from back problems, arthritis, etc.) Allergies to various substances: make up (these guys wear it as actors), soaps, shampoos --- all these things can cause serious skin inflammation also. So can food allergies. I guess, I just ran across this thread, and as a doctor, I felt bad there was so much misinformation in it --- I felt like I needed to speak up and say something, not simply in Rourke's defense, but for anyone else out there. We do not what is going on with Mickey Rourke or anyone else - it's between them and their doctor. But to just blithely pin it on substance abuse, alcohol, or whatever, is a very slapshot (and low blow) approach to "diagnosing" anyone. If doctors did that, we would be fired, sued and run out of town on a rail. (And doctors should be, if that's the way they practice medicine these days.) If you are suffering any of these symptoms, I hope you will find a way to see a competent internist, someone who specializes in internal medicine to help you with any problems you might be having. Good luck to you, if that's the case. I wish you health and all the best. |
