Finally quit 3 years ago. Best decision ever. You can do it OP! Gone bezerkin... :battleflag: |

Rough first week, easier second, even easier third bla bla. Don't even think about smokes any more. I had been smoking for at least 25 years, 2 x 30 gram rollies (roll your own) every week at a cost of $25 - 30/each packet (say $60/week). $60 bucks a week is a helluva payrise when you think about it. |

The first step is to decrease that desire which happens when you change your attitude and beliefs about it. So anything you can do to start decreasing your desire towards it will be a step in the right direction. |

Quoting: Mister Obvious Recognize the trigger situation when it's happening, and realize it's just the last traces working their way out of your body and consciousness... it can't control you. Absolutely. I'll be avoiding the bars/heavy drinking for a little while. Drinking is my ultimate trigger. There's something quite comforting about a cig after a shot and a beer. No more. Are you doing it cold turkey or are you on nicotine gum/losenges etc? Quoting: FOTN Nope, cold turkey. I think that is the only way for me. I used to think I could be a casual smoker, i.e. just in social situations, but that proved impossible. I cannot have any relationship with nicotine if I want to stay away from cigarettes. It's just too addictive. Last Edited by Iconoclastics on 07/11/2013 12:53 PM "The person who is in love with their vision of community will destroy community. Biggest part of smoking is getting out of the routine of it. Find an alternative when you crave and tough it out. You will feel disgusted seeing people smoke in the future. Good luck. |

That's good advice. Also too.... If you live in a "Fire Safe Cigarette" state, the chemical they use to make them self-extinguish is carpet glue. When I found that out I was through. No more real cigs for me. I use an electronic and a Nicotrol inhaler now. Gonna give them up too eventually, but for now they are working. All this has happened before, and will happen again. |

Blue lotus, Damiana, Catnip, Wild dagga (there are others) all have there own mild psychoactive effect. It's relatively cheap to replace your tobacco habit. Just an idea. |

Like the indians used to smoke. And tobacco's not bad for you. Cigarettes are only bad due to the 900+poisons they put in. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 42100721 United States 07/11/2013 02:20 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I quit a year ago now.I think my health went down hill for doing so. Something was good in the tobacco. It is said to raise DHEA. But now I'm off the inhalers I had to start after I quit smoking and we had a big fire for 2 months here. I just enjoy all the thrift store finds I decided I'd spend all that cig money to get the most bang out of it.We have great free bins here too but the cig money made the game. You'd be surprised st how much more money you have when you quit. I'm not even tempted sitting with smokers. I just think of the thrift store/yard sale addict I've become. I'm not a hoarder yet but I guess I could have been said to be a nicotine fiend. I could wear a patch to quit and still be smoking a pack a day. Now all I have to think of is that $200 item practically new I bought for the price of a pack of cigs which are high here. I also had moved to an area that doubled the price of cigs on me a year ago. Like instead of $3.25 you went to $6.75 a pack. A real rip off price. |

Quoting: Iconoclastics This time I'm actually ready. Coming from a die hard smoker I'm telling you right now you can do it too! Years from now when you're on your deathbed, do you think you will ever feel like you wished you had smoked more cigarettes? No. You won't. In fact, if you are still smoking late into your life and quitting at that point is too little too late, you WILL REGRET IT (even more so if the smoking has put you on your deathbed). ...and don't forget that you are using your hard earned money to poison yourself, the environment and people around you, and to pay for some cocksuckers yacht. Godspeed and Good luck. No more ciggies for me, I'm out. Good for you! The first 14 days are hard, just try to rest as much as you can and let it all drain out. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 43212205 France 07/11/2013 03:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I quit on september 25th 2011. Cold turkey, no e-cigs, no tapering, no gum. just will power and breath mints. it wasnt even a money thing although they are expensive and i resent the amount of tax that went to a gov I do not support. I couldnt breathe right in bed at night and coughed too much and the hit of nicotine was not worth the drama and pain. I got really smashed at a fireworks party in november 2012 and smoked two of my old brand and thought my throat was bleeding liquid fire, totally disgusting. never smoked since. I bought a bike and can ride for hours on adventures where before I was a slob. I'm now in peak physical condition, have literally three times the energy that i used to, I sleep better, food and wine tastes better. I think the trick is to grow up and accept that you are no longer that grungy teeneger. you are mortal, it is a waste of life and money. if you are cool you are cool without cigs. my sisters boyfriend of 5 years just cannot quit, he is drip feeding himself and wasting all the money on the patches and pills and all that. you have to want it, you have to use all your strength and not do it for show or to please others. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1474063 United States 07/11/2013 03:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Smoking store bought smokes are very bad - 7000 chemicals on each and every cigarette. I roll my own from organic tobacco and my doctor on my last check up could not detect I was smoking. He could not believe that I smoked - his quote "the test's are that of a non smoker". He re-done my test thinking that his nurse labeled the blood samples wrong - tests came back the exact same. Doctor said that he thought that the 7000 chemicals definitly without question causes alot more problems then the Tar and nicotine. He went on to explain that the filters used today keep most of the tar from the user so that the ORGANIC tobacco user will NOT see the same problems as the MASS PRODUCED GOV'T CONTROLLED CIGARETTE. |

I feel like a new man, as does my pocket. The best advice is, they will never leave you alone but it gets easier, and it gets easier to be in control of 'them'. A friend gave up recently and had one after three months, in his mind it would be the best smoke ever - instead it was rancid and totally regretted it. He's still smoke free. Good luck, it's easy if you want to do it. I personally had enough of being a slave, ie, ooh the local shop/store is closing for the day and need to buy more... My slavery is over and feel ashamed with myself for the years of abuse I've given my body. If I have an urge I take a nico tablet and the craving goes away. I'm not 100% there but can say I am cured!!!! Good luck my brother/friend - I really mean that. Regards, Jon |
