Dj's used to be thought of as super special celebs back in the 80s and 90s, but nowadays anyone can mix songs together and make a set list for a bar or club. Its no big deal at all, most people just ignore the Dj now and treat them as just an average joe, and so they should, because they're mostly all talent-less wannabies.

uhh not necessarily/....You have to atleast know how to play an Instrument (specially Piano/Keayboard) and should know how drumming works to produce electronic music. I know how to play Guitar, and Piano and I want to learn how to produce electro music like Deadmou5 and Skrillex and Skream...

yea cause you know how to play a guitar, you strum the strings and press the fretboard, and im sure you know that to play a piano or keyboard you press down on the keys.

don't be ridiculous....I can play all types of Heavy Metal songs on the electric Guitar. I can play Led Zeppelin as well. But I'm not very good on the keyboard since i just started learning 6 months ago.

however, I always loved to learn how to produce electro music since i'm in love with house/dubstep music

DJ/producer here. Doing it since mid 90's, on and off, just for fun, sometimes for cash. And please, don't confuse DJ with "douchebag with laptop and hands in the air" who never saw or mixed one vinil.

Love to mix freestyle with house/tech/reague/disco/soul/funk/ and everything in between. But was famous over my frenchyyy house sets between 96/2003. Even played in clubs in Switzerland, spain, france, austria, italy, ibiza... and a few other good places with happy crowds. Now just play for fun, mostly at pool parties, and produce mu shit when feel like i am up to something good.

last published tracks of mine (2011 EP) were a mash of george duke, shalamar and beastie boys samplings with minimal techdisco and fucked up filters into pumping house tracks with fat beats.

Most EDM producers use Ableton.

EDM DJ Sets vary widely. Some use Traktor, Some use Virtual DJ, Some use Serato, Some Use Ableton, Some use CDJs, Some use turntables, some use a combination of all of the above or some of the above.

What you use to DJ or Produce is only the tool.

Ableton is really good for electronic, I would recommend learning synthesis and some into to music theory and see if its your cup of tea

Yup...you gotta dj here. I started 17 years ago - i'm a trained classical pianist...i started on vinyl mixing west coast house music. I started my label, twisted roots recordings in 96 and opened a record store here in vancouver. I moved to mexico and worked as a resident dj for thievery corporations club in playa. I have lots to share - but i will tell you - try and start with vinyl on turntables. Don't go the route of mixing with software - you need the foundation of mixing organically with technic 12's and a mixer. I say this, as you will be taken a lot more seriously if you have that foundation ... 'cause as we know, every one is a dj now...but MANY and most don't have a clue what they are doing or have an idea of how music is written etc....we can discuss things on private email if you wish. Serato and 2 turntables with music on your laptop. Sounds and feels just like vinyl. Thats what all we top old school DJs use.

been producing EDM for about 12 years, in my opinion ableton live is the way to go software wise. Some prefer logic but the workflow of Ableton live is much easier to learn on. Best place to go online for learning the ropes is sonic academy:

get yourself a midi keyboard, it will make things ALOT easier.

just keep doing tutorials and don't give up, you'll get there if you truly desire to be a pro.

M4SONIC uses Ableton to make those tracks. The piece of equipment in the video is called the novation launchpad, the Ableton software is used to create the scenes assigned to the keys. Ableton just released their own controller called the push which is what you'd want to go with, however you can get a launchpad for cheap to test the waters before you go all in. You probably also want massive for ableton which unlocks a whole other world of sound, again if you go all in.
