UPDATE: Massive wildfire threatens power and water supplies to San Francisco !!! This map shows huge California wildfire still moving into Yosemi
Updated: Saturday, 24 August, 2013 at 12:23 UTC
Description
A giant wildfire raging out of control grew to nearly 200 square miles Friday and spread into Yosemite National Park at the height of the summer season for one of California's most popular tourist destinations. While it has closed some backcountry hiking, it was not threatening the Yosemite Valley, home to such iconic sights as the Half Dome and El Capitan rock formations and Bridalveil and Yosemite falls. But in an unusual move, Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for San Francisco 150 miles away because of the threat to the city's utilities. The blaze had already done some damage and threatened more to the lines and stations that pipe power to San Francisco, so Brown, who had declared an emergency for the fire area earlier in the week, made the unusual move of extending it to the city across the state. San Francisco gets 85 percent of its water from the Yosemite-area Hetch Hetchy reservoir that is about 4 miles from the fire, though that had yet to be affected. But it was forced to shut down two of its three hydroelectric power stations in the area. The city has so far been able to buy power on the open market and use existing supplies, but further disruptions or damage could have an effect, according to city power officials and the governor's statement.

The declaration frees funding and resources to help the city and makes it eligible for more federal funds to help with power shortages and outages or water problems. The weeklong blaze on the timbered slopes of the Western Sierra Nevada has spread to 196 square miles and was only 5 percent contained. It continued to grow in several directions, although "most of the fire activity is pushing to the east right into Yosemite," said Daniel Berlant, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Smoke blowing across the Sierra into the state of Nevada forced officials in several counties to cancel outdoor school activities and issue health advisories, especially for people with respiratory problems. Authorities urged more evacuations in nearby communities where thousands have already been forced out by flames. The fire was threatening about 5,500 residences, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The blaze has destroyed four homes and 12 outbuildings in several different areas. More than 2,000 firefighters were on the lines and one sustained a heat-related injury. While the park remained open, the blaze closed a 4-mile stretch of State Route 120, one of three entrances into Yosemite on the west side. Two other western routes and an eastern route were open. Backcountry permits are required to hike in that area, Cobb said. The park was no longer issuing those and had contacted every person who had received a permit to go there. Two roads into that area were closed and occupants of a campground near the Route 120 west entrance were relocated.

Description
More than 2,000 firefighters with the support of tanker planes and helicopters were combating Saturday a California forest fire that has covered more than 51,000 hectares (200 sq. miles) and threatens thousands of homes and other buildings. Authorities say that San Francisco's water supply could go murky in the coming hours as it mixes with ashes from the wildfire near Yosemite National Park, some 310 kilometers (195 miles) to the east in an area that is part of the city's hydroelectric system. The so-called "Rim Fire" swept into Yosemite National Park on Friday and on Saturday firefighters had controlled only 5 percent of the front of the blaze being spread by winds of up to 20 kilometers (12 miles) per hour. Forest fires are part of a forest's natural cycle of maturation and renovation, but the expansion of human populations into previously uninhabited regions often requires firefighters' efforts, and at times the loss of their lives, to contain and extinguish them. The flames have spread northeast to some 4 kilometers (2 1/2 miles) from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, whose dam and turbines produce almost 85 percent of San Francisco's electricity. California Gov. Jerry Brown extended the state of emergency to the city and county of San Francisco due to the fire's threat to public services. According to the authorities, the fire began seven days ago in Stanislaus National Forest, which, like Yosemite, is one of the state's main tourist attractions. Some 4,500 homes and other buildings are endangered by the blaze, against which more than 2,000 firefighters are working with the support of tanker planes and helicopters that drop water and chemical compounds on the flames to slow the combustion.

Description
Firefighters are working around the clock to gain control of a wildfire threatening Yosemite National Park. The fire has already burned 200 square miles of forest over the past week and is less than 10 percent contained. Strong afternoon winds continue to push the flames of the massive rim fire, and the limits of more than 2,500 firefighters along the front lines. "The terrain is steep," said Ashley Taylor of U.S. Forest Services. "The crews are out there working hard, and some areas just can't even be accessed". Still, the fire continues to force its way into those areas, climbing the rugged mountains, racing through the valleys, threatening more than 4,000 homes. Nervous residents can only watch and worry where it might go next. "What happens when it gets up on here, it'll make a run," said retired firefighter Robert Quinlan. "This will make an in run into Sonora." Hot shot teams are guarding communities on the ground. A half dozen aircraft are targeting hotspots from the air, including an area near the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite National Park, which provides water and hydroelectricity to San Francisco. With the flames now less than four miles away, Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency for the city. "It's quite possible that it could reach the Hetch Hetchy with its movement," said Tom Medema, spokesman for Yosemite National Park. Also in jeopardy is a section of three dozen ancient sequoias. Though right now, the fire appears to be turning away from the trees, but still running in multiple directions, out of control, and swallowing everything in its path.

Giant wildfire chars 15,000 acres within Yosemite National Park

Posted on August 26, 2013 by The Extinction Protocol
August 26, 2013 – CALIFORNIA – A colossal wildfire raging across the western edge of Yosemite National Park swept further into the park on Sunday and forced the evacuation of some its camps due to heavy smoke, according to a park spokesman. The blaze on Sunday had come within 2 miles of a key reservoir that supplies most of San Francisco’s water. The so-called Rim Fire, which has burned 134,000 acres, caused the closure of the White Wolf area of the park on its western side, said Yosemite spokesman Tom Medema. Thirteen of 74 camps were occupied and evacuated, he said. The flames had consumed 15,000 acres within Yosemite, a park known for its waterfalls, giant sequoia groves and other scenic wonders, by Sunday afternoon, up from just over 12,000 acres in the morning, he said. “There’s no eminent risk from the fire but the smoke impact is so heavy that we’re evacuating those areas,” Medema said. He did not know how many people were evacuated but said that one of the camps had 25 occupants. Officials said they have no plans to shut down the entire park or its top attractions. The fire was threatening power and water supplies to San Francisco, about 200 miles to the west. On Sunday, it moved to within 2 miles of the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, which serves 85 percent of San Francisco with water, according to San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spokesman Tyrone Jue. The fire had been 4 miles from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir the day before. Jue said reservoir water remained clear on Sunday, despite threats of ash contamination.

“There are strike teams and crews in place right now to assist with fire protection” near the reservoir, Jue said. The fire also passed through two power structures that help supply San Francisco’s public facilities with electricity. Utility crews planned to make repairs on Sunday, Jue said. The utility commission has been drawing on power reserves and purchasing electricity since Monday due to the downed power structures. Jue said San Francisco power has not been disrupted. A 111,000-acre (44,920-hctare) fire near the resort town of Sun Valley in central Idaho was 82 percent contained on Sunday as the number of firefighters assigned to the blaze was reduced to several hundred from a high of 1,800, officials said. At its height a week ago, the blaze forced the evacuation of 2,250 homes in upscale developments in a scenic river valley known for a world-class ski resort and for premier hiking and biking trails that wind through the Sawtooth Mountains. The Rim Fire had destroyed 11 homes, 1,000 outbuildings and four commercial properties by Sunday. Evacuation advisories were lifted for roughly 2,500 residences in two Tuolumne County communities in California on Saturday, but at least 2,000 households were under evacuation advisories, Fleishman said. The 2013 fire season has already drained U.S. Forest Service fire suppression and emergency funds, causing the agency to redirect $600 million meant for other projects like campground and trail maintenance and thinning of trees to reduce wildfire risks, agency spokesman Mike Ferris has said. –Reuters [link to theextinctionprotocol.wordpress.com]

California's Rim Fire Now 6th Largest in State History, and is 30% Controlled
California's massive Rim Fire in Yosemite National Park continues to grow, but an army of over 4,000 firefighters are making headway against the blaze, and had attained 30% containment of the fire as of 9:20 am EDT on Thursday. According to Inciweb, fire has burned over 192,700 acres. This moves the fire into 6th place for largest fire in state history, according to statistics tabulated by wunderground's weather historian, Christopher C. Burt in his latest post, "The Worst Wild Fires in U.S. History". The Rim Fire will have difficultly surpassing California's largest fire on record--the Cedar Fire in San Diego County of October 2003. That fire burned 273,246 acres (430 square miles). California has had its driest year-to-date period, so it is no surprise that the state is experiencing an unusually large fire this summer.
