User ID: 45920151 United Kingdom 08/28/2013 05:15 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The Dell keylogger conspiracy hoax by Ryan Block, posted Jun 16th 2005 at 8:08PM Just in case you've seen that web page floating around implicating Dell in some wacked out government conspiracy by suggesting they fit a 4mb keylogger between the keyboard end of some guy's 600m and the Ethernet adapter, we'd like to point out a few key bits, having been inside a Dell laptop or forty. Dell laptop keyboards plug directly into the motherboard with a ribbon cable He was inside to replace a broken PCMCIA slot riser on the motherboard? Uh, that's a guaranteed next-day mobo replacement on a "almost brand new Dell 600m"—not that you could, but why bother even if you knew how and had spare laptop motherboard parts? We've never seen a zip-tied circuit board in professionally assembled machine That device is far too massive to fit under the mobo of a Dell laptop Awful blurry picture of where it's at in the machine! Sorry dude, but we're calling major, major BS on this. Anyone care to prove us wrong and open up a huge can of civil rights violations? Update: Looks like the hoaxster pulled the images from here. Are there hooks in Windows OS that poll the capture chip based upon IP address/MAC address and unique identifiers Microsoft assigns to your computer? Perhaps.. Just consider every manufactured computer and peripheral device is compromised after 2 years DHS became a entity. Seek out legacy computers, old hardware and use a vintage unix or linux operating system with this older hardware if you desire more private computing experience. |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 21548336 United States 08/28/2013 05:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It' is not a hoax, it is old technology. This is how they USED to track everyone. Now-a-days, it must be much simpler. I happen to know for a fact that at least 5 years ago there was a device you could point at a computer through a window from across the street, and a recreation of what was happening on that computer would appear on another computer connected to the device. No hardware required. Used laser line of sight. I imagine by now that can be done by satellite. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 11866144 United States 08/28/2013 05:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Im astonished that they would need a hardware key logger when all your information is already probed by the NSA or GCHQ and stored in Yotta-byte data centers for further analysis. Every email every text message every phone call every thing you do or say on the internet. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21548336 Dude you are really retarded. Ever hear of them new fangled word processor thingeys? I hear they can type what ever you want. The legal risk of forging DHS letterhead is pretty extreme just to create a hoax. The hoax would've been fine without the letter. |

[Thanks, scim] [link to www.engadget.com] wow, sounds like someone talking out of their ass. "Dell laptop keyboards plug directly into the motherboard with a ribbon cable"...yea, thats the point, there shouldnt be anything on the cable that connects the mainboard and keyboard. "We've never seen a zip-tied circuit board in professionally assembled machine".....really?!?!? look harder "That device is far too massive to fit under the mobo of a Dell laptop".......what are the dimensions of this device? you must know if you KNOW it wont fit. "Awful blurry picture of where it's at in the machine!" i can see it just fine. "He was inside to replace a broken PCMCIA slot riser on the motherboard? Uh, that's a guaranteed next-day mobo replacement on a "almost brand new Dell 600m"—not that you could, but why bother even if you knew how and had spare laptop motherboard parts?"....yes you can [link to www.youtube.com] "Sorry dude, but we're calling major, major BS on this.".....How many computers have you built? Just because you dont understand it doesnt mean it isnt possible. To think otherwise is childish. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 29203778 Italy 08/28/2013 06:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | maybe a hoax but the latest computers (Win8 ready) with UEFI motherboards did away with the BIOS chip and run a low lever OS before the regular OS boots (Windows, Linux, & Others) this is definitely a security concern! UEFI = Unified Extensible Firmware Interface |
