Fukushima leak raises questions over Olympic bid as radiation levels hit new high
Wednesday, 4 September 2013

Radiation levels around tanks storing contaminated water at Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant have risen by a fifth to a new high, officials say.

Ground readings near one set of tanks stood at 2,200 millisieverts (mSv) on Tuesday, the plant operator and Japan's nuclear authority said.

Saturday's reading was 1,800 mSv.

Last month, Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco), the plant operator said it had found highly contaminated water leaking from a storage tank.

Other leaks have also been reported, prompting the government on Tuesday to pledge 47bn yen ($473m, £304m) in funding to tackle the problem.

The spike in radiation levels found on Tuesday was in the same area where the 1,800 mSv level was detected on Saturday, a spokeswoman from Tepco told Bloomberg.

The readings are thought to be high enough to provide a lethal dose in hours

wow its getting close to the point of no return now...
I guess that is the point where the whole site becomes so radioactive that nobody can work there.

2.2Sv wow. How long does it take to die from that? must be about 1 hr or less.

a few minutes for fatal dose (long term)
a ten minute unshielded dose, vomiting etc and such, fatal dose

the list is pretty scary

and your right, if it becomes humanly impossible to fix, there is doom right there.... gone is the time for jump crews....

gone is the time to build a stupid 'ice' wall enigma fairy tale....

Re: Fukushima leak raises questions over Olympic bid as radiation levels hit new high
Fukushima is just one piece of the radiation poisoning that will take us down as a species. It is amazing watching just how little care is being shown about the whole situation.

The only consolation is that the monsters that forged ahead with nuclear technology will also receive the same effects. Nobody will be escaping the effects of the radiation. I can just see the chosen few living in their bunkers while the people on the surface are affected more quickly. All the pretty people with their Malibu California beach front homes will have front row seats.

It is surreal how Japan is still putting so much effort into hosting the Olympics. I guess they drink their own koolaid.

It is interesting how the Fukushima situation is reaching critical mass and the Syrian situation are happening at the same time.

Thanks for the post OP, what do you think of Putin's recent warning about a misplaced strike on syria and the possibility of affecting nuclear plants?

Fukushima has been long forgotten ever since these late events, yet sadly is still present. Just comes to add up eh
