Propane shortage becomes an emergency
As brutal cold continues to blast much of the nation, a propane shortage is driving up heating bills, prompting accusations of price gouging and leading to energy emergencies in more than a dozen states.
"They're worried they might not be able to keep those chickens warm," said Jeff Helms of the Alabama Farmers Federation.
And consumers are grousing about higher prices.
"It looks like there's some price gouging going on," said Phillip Wallace, director of schools in Stewart County, Tenn., which were closed Thursday and Friday because they were short on propane for heating classrooms. The district was due to receive 2,000 gallons. But Wallace complained the propane cost $3.45 a gallon, up from $1.29.

Propane shortage reaches emergency levels
With frigid temperatures expected to continue, suppliers are rationing propane and officials are urging consumers to conserve it. Some accuse suppliers of price gouging.
WASHINGTON — As brutally cold temperatures continue to blast much of the nation, a propane shortage is driving up heating bills, prompting accusations of price gouging and leading to energy emergencies in more than a dozen states, from Alabama to Michigan.
The lack of propane has forced the closing of schools in Tennessee, led to calls for people to turn down their thermostats and given poultry farmers the shivers.

I didn't know you had to keep chickens warm? I mean I've never had a chicken die from cold weather, I've had a few chickens die from heat, but I've never put a heater in the chicken coop or anything when it's really cold. Should I?

Wood is one energy source the EPA is trying like hell to control. Expect to see more enforcement of emissions laws. However, they need the local law to support them on this, which just aint gonna happen in many rural places. So they will start with the city sheeple, then try to branch out from there with the orwellian control.

They're trying to get everyone in the Northeast to switch over to natural gas. Who the hell is going to switch with prices fluctuating this wildly?

Bastards kill off the coal industry, shut down the coal fired power plants then leave us without enough electricity.

Obama's energy plan is worse than Dick Cheneys and that's saying a lot.

This is what happens when you reduce your national production capacity to the bare bones. One emergency comes up and everyone is screwed.

Talk about all the eggs in one basket.

This is also why our fuel supply is so shoddy that one problem at one refinery causes regional prices to skyrocket.

Of course we're not going to learn the lesson and continue on.

Re: Propane shortage becomes an emergency
As I understand it:

Propane is a byproduct of making gasoline. Before grills and so forth a lot of propane was burned off at the refineries because they did not have a summer market for it. It is difficult to store large amounts of propane. To produce more propane refineries would have to go through an expensive process to produce more which would probably affect all oil product prices. So probably they would not be able to produce more propane this year. They adjust fuel oil production every year for increased use in the winter months.

Even if some dealers get prosecuted for price gouging don't look for any relief. These things take years to settle. Keep your receipts.

I am surprised a lot of people aren't complaining about heating oil prices. I am sure they increased too.

I have seen things in the news about natural gas shortages. I thought natural gas was tied together in a network of pipes nationwide, maybe not. I guess the only thing that is certain is higher prices on that too. Utilities though can't raise prices very fast because in most states they are regulated.

Abnormally long cold temperature has to be dealt with.
Something that can tolerate 30 degrees will be killed by minus 20.

This should be obvious to normal people.

I'm very seriously considering the rocket stove heater thing.(not sure if that's what it's called, but the one for heat, not just cooking). Not for my current house, but definitely the next one.

They are referring to chicken growers. You know the big buildings that house thousands of chicks and grow them out? Yes, chicks need 95 degree heat their 1st week and then 90 degree their second week and so on until they are fully feathered out about 8 weeks later.
I just heard from one chicken grower, they are refusing new shipments of chicks because of the cost of propane. They get wholesale pricing too!

Oh come on!

No one noticed the tremendous drive for "us natural gas" lately... even long before this "emergency" started?

If there's a cheap viable alternative, what incentive would people have for switching to Natural gas???

I would gladly switch over to natural gas. It has always been cheaper than electric or propane. Problem is it costs you a fortune to get the lines out here and you have to have so many people willing to use it, etc., etc. So, it ain't happening.
