Storm clouds gather over a US economy heading for icebergs
"Unless the Fed begins cutting rates by this summer, which it won't, then the US economy could be in for a nasty recession. The stock market has not yet woken up to the full gravity of this," he said.

If past is prologue, we have three or four months to find shelter before the full lightning storm begins. Buy government bonds, horde cash and shun risk

Monday view: Storm clouds gather over a US economy heading for icebergs
By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard (Filed: 12/06/2006)

Like a thunder clap too close for comfort, the US bond market last week issued its time-honoured warning of recession. This time for real. The yield on 10-year Treasuries slid below the short-term rates, an emphatic signal that investors are more worried about a US housing bust than surging inflation.

Fear is creeping into the markets that a hyperactive Federal Reserve run by a chatterbox novice, risks sinking the global economy by tightening too hard - supposedly to curb prices, in reality to combat his fatal reputation as an easy-money ideologue.

Yes, bonds issued the 'inverted yield curve' warning in February. But those were halcyon days when the world was still awash with liquidity. The central banks of Asia, Europe and America have since succumbed to a belated and fierce bout of orthodoxy, raising rates in unison for the first time since the early 1980s.

Bernard Connolly, global strategist for Banque AIG, says the Fed, now chaired by Ben Bernanke, has already gone too far by raising rates sixteen times from 1pc to 5pc since June 2004, too much for an overspent economy running on fumes.

WHAT have you been smoking?
people will be papering their houses with tghis shit, and just because it doesnt make decent tp

OUR economy is hitting the classic point fiat money systems ALWAYS
hit, runaway inflation or
DEPRESSION
IN the late 70's they chose a mild depression (called a severe recession by the media) and bought some time,
but that AINT GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN.
For one thing its a different world, there is NO underlying strenght left to the American economy, no serious industry, hell, consumer spending is our main driving force, and thats powered by people taking out mortages one two, hell THREE deep, and the real estate market is falling apart
in short, the american economy has been GUTTED, and you talk about keeping CASH?
HELL, keep gold, silver, OR EVEN BETTER
something you can EAT.

Re: Storm clouds gather over a US economy heading for icebergs
""We want to be looking through the windshield, we don't want to be just looking at the rear view mirror," said Governor Randall Kroszner."

The past IS prologue and the Fed has already seen what's been happening, looking in the rear view mirror as a crashing economy is tail-gating a wreckless driver. The only thing the Fed can do is look through the windshield and put the pedal to the metal, hoping to outrun the rear-end collision right near its bumper.

This could be good news for the little guy, depending on how you view this. Since this phenomenon affects governments world-wide, some deals will have to be cut in order for them to survive; else, the world will be thrown back into the dark ages.

The Fed and its entire corporate structure have screwed the American people for far too long. The chickens are coming home to roost. Perhaps the day of Jubilee is upon us, which means the reorganization of all debt, which would be the prudent tack to take, and start over. Of course, that is wishful thinking on my part.

If rates continue to go up, we can no longer afford to buy crap at WalMart. Of course, if the Fed drops the rate, foreign investment heads elsewhere and our loanshark lender nations send Vinny around to crack some knuckles...

Put some make-up on a homely woman and she will look really good. Wake up with her in the morning and prepare for a shock. You don't have what you thought you had. Wasn't she clever!

The FED wants a mild recession to kill inflation and deflate the housing bubble.

we've had 'em before. Clinton gave us one.

remember?

dude...it's being devalued as we speak. almost 30% this year alone...and climbing.

buying stuff outside the US is where the devaluation shows up....like oil and gold for example.

YOu've got to consider what made the metal go sky high in the first place and thats excess money. In a deflation money evaporates into hyperspace almost instantly, faster than it can be created.

Re: Storm clouds gather over a US economy heading for icebergs
I'v heard it said it's much easier to deal with a recession than it is inflation. Once inflation takes hold, it's much harder to turn around than a recession.

So I suppose the Fed's actions make sense. They'll weather an economic downturn rather than watch inflation get worse.

I just want to know what all this means to Joe Q. Public. I don't own stocks, bonds, or anything. Just rent an apartment and try to get buy like everyone else.

People are piling into bonds atm because of the higher interest rates. But don't do long term or you will end up losing any gains. I'm just looking at all the sweet deals in the stock market...
