Quoting: Anonymous Coward 55254841 I wonder if developing a two stage process - pine to filter out bacteria and pathogens and charcoal to clarify and filter for taste - would be effective. Life is a spiritual war and no matter where we lay our head, we live in a warzone. There will be casualties. You do get to choose your side. I chose the Bright Side where my God fights for me. Others chose the Dark Side and fight for an entity that views them with disdain and discards them. |

I'd think maple or another sweet sap tree would be more palatable. The more micro tubules it has the better. Would a tree found near water work better? Would a mangrove type tree work better? Or would a desert plant actually work better? Desert trees might have more tubules to wick up the most water? Why wouldn't the root of a tree work? |

Here is a video on making Pine Needle Tea that may save a life like it did for the early settlers. Pine Needle Tea is full of Vit. C. Five times more than an orange. Just thought you would like to know what else this tree can be used for. Peace Amy |

Just a small bit of wood can filter water with 99% of nasty stuff removed. Skeptics say this isn't a good enough filter. Still, in an emergency this is the way to go. In an emergency, you need a way to filter water. It is good to know it can be done with very little supplies really. Just a knife or way to cut the branch and a bit of tubing. Do you even need the clamp? There is a clamp in the picture, but I don't think you'd really need it. The resulting water may taste a bit piney but you can at least drink it. There are pictures and more information in the article. I had once read an article about filtering water through an unglazed teracotta pot, but this sounds a lot easier. I'd especially like someone on this forum to film themselves making this system and update on how much water can be filtered this way. How fast? How does it taste? It is good to know this, it might save a life. Pine trees are very easy to locate. Perhaps other trees would be useful. Pine trees are very plentiful here. Interesting since 100 nanometers = .01 microns.....which is as good as any commercial or portable camping water filter. Maybe Les Stroud can do a demo for us of this. |

Then you should have some pretty good water, although it will taste funny. |

We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” – Carl Sagan |

Fyi .. you can do a couple other things with pine trees and birch .. if you have access to plastic bags (I keep 20 taped up in my bob) .. you can tie them around the branches of the pine tree .. at the end of the day you will have good amounts of water .. you can also take a sapling .. about an inch .. cut in half the long way .. make a split, like an alley down the middle .. take you knife, make an upside down T in the tree and shove the sapling in .. it is an automatic tap .. fresh water .. also good if someone has to control their blood sugar .. .... 22426221213 .... |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24908157 This would work for water that is relatively clear, but not sure how it would fair for murky stuff. I like knowing this though. I can imagine you could take an empty soda bottle, shove a piece of pine in the mouth and hang it upside down--using a known clean source for the catch. |

User ID: 25719696 United States 03/06/2014 09:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Pine's contain estrogen compounds, so I would hope someone would test the chemicals present in the water. Turpentine isn't that bad in itself, but it can contain some of the phytoestrogens. (They are plant estrogens, but still can have an effect on humans). One of the more dangerous side effects is that they can cause miscarriages, as well as pretty bad side effects in children. *It should be fine for short term or emergency use (except for pregnant woman), but you would need to add something to remove the chemicals for any long-term use plan.
