deadly viral disease from the Middle East has claimed its first victims in Southeast Asia, killing a Malaysian man who returned from pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, the World Health Organization said Thursday.

The WHO confirmed a second case in the same region, a nurse in the Philippines who returned home from the Gulf.

The cases touch on some of the biggest worries among health experts since they discovered Middle East Respiratory Syndrome or MERS.

Pilgrims can also go to Mecca to perform the rituals at other times of the year. This is sometimes called the "lesser pilgrimage", or Umrah. However, even if one chooses to perform the Umrah, they are still obligated to perform the Hajj at some other point in their lifetime if they have the means to do so.

” The CDC also says they would not be surprised if additional MERS cases are identified. They are approaching the situation with “an abundance of caution.”

The patient flew from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to London, England and then to Chicago on April 24. From Chicago the patient took a bus to Indiana. On the 27th, the patient began to experience respiratory symptoms, including shortness of breath, coughing, and fever. The patient went to an emergency department in a Muster, IN hospital on April 28th and was admitted on that same day. The patient is being well cared for and is isolated.

Since the first documented cases in spring 2012, MERS has sickened at least 339 people in Saudi Arabia alone and killed nearly a third of them, according to the country’s Ministry of Health.

Currently, there is no known vaccine or specific treatment.
