I've been watching earthquakes for years and Puerto Rico rarely had any

good wash away all those filthy lazy ricans

They seem to have little ones all day long.

Had like a 6.1 in Jan 2014 while I was there, scary but no big deal.

The .gov is preparing for one though.

I believe that this thread is BS and needs to be trashed. The way the OP started this made it look like it had already happened. However its a prediction, and should have been posted as such.

You haven't been watching very hard, because that's bullshit. PR has always had earthquakes, including some pretty big ones.

I was there in February, had a great time, loved every minute.

With that said however it is worth noting that the Caribbean area has had a number of VERY LARGE earthquakes throughout the period that (European) records have been kept.

Some of those earthquakes have caused parts of islands to disappear beneath the sea, caused localized tsunami's, and of course caused massive destruction on the islands upon which they occurred ... and if big enough some destruction on close neighboring islands. (most recent big one - Haiti)

While the Caribbean is not as geologically active as the Pacific Rim is it is probably capable of generating localized earthquakes that are nearly as powerful and nearly as destructive.

Beach Front and Ocean Front Property in the Caribbean is BEAUTIFUL. On the other hand much of that property is susceptible to being overrun by a tsunami if an earthquake were to occur nearby.

Since some distances are actually very small in the Caribbean (Puerto Rico to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands is only about 80 miles as the crow flies) the warning time for a major tsunami in that region of the world may actually be MUCH LESS than the Japanese had when the earthquake that caused the Fukushima event happened.

When I have visited there I have always paid attention to the signs "Tsunami Evacuation Route" so I KNOW to INSTANTLY start RUNNING along that route if a major earthquake were to occur when I was down near the water. (80 miles distance only gives one about 8 minutes to get to a safe location, say 100'+ above sea level - and remember if one occurs there will be multiple waves, with the second or third usually being the biggest).

I LOVE the Caribbean, want to spend more time there, maybe even build a house there (if I do it will be HIGH) but most of it is of volcanic origin ... and part of being along a volcanic vent system IS EARTHQUAKES.
