Alright, here's the first asteroid I've found which does not correspond to the predicted position of any known asteroid; it's either a new discovery or the recovery of an asteroid whose predicted position is no longer accurate.

Well there it is. I will title you Dr Asteroid. Do you like any of the asteroid names yet. I am going for Laika.

Giggity. I think it ought to be called "Rosetta" myself since that's what started the confusion lol.

Good idea, but surely you need something near Rosetta, Memphis is taken but you could have Abukir or Alexandria.

You can see a simulation of Dr Astro's new asteroid by using this website

[link to www.asterank.com]

near the top centre of the screen you will see the the link to "plot a custom orbit"

You are presented with a dialogue box with eight values to fill in. Here are the numbers you should enter, in descending order.

3.11599411
0.2618728
10.87934
299
335.07559
0.01356
2456801.5
2008.82

You don't seem to be able to be able to produce a link from here and the program is a little buggy, but you should see the orbit simulated.

When you are done look at the other options like 3d view, exoplanets and dark matter.

Rosetta has to perform a number of manoeuvres in order to get in the correct position and velocity to be captured by the comets gravity.

Once in orbit it will scan the comets surface with a number of instruments.

So no comet sceptics out there then ?

I'm with Kip. Has it been officially cataloged yet?

No word from the MPC. They don't seem to have done anything with the observations I sent, including some of a known asteroid. No response. Maybe I'll see something in the next MPC circular.

Ok. We'll just have to wait then. Notice I didn't say "wait patiently" chuckle

Rosetta completed big burn number 2 on Wednesday, I wasn't able to post here.

Here are some of Rosetta's pictures

Rosetta has now closed to within 1 lunar distance from comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko, the next burn is scheduled for the 18h.
