Apocalypse is right. Pandemics require isolation, so be prepared in every way.
Never allow anyone into your home or let anyone go out during a pandemic.

This is the preparedness list that my husband and I used for our starting point a few years ago and we have expanded well beyond what is listed. Our friends have also used it as a baseline for their preparations.
I hope it helps others to prepare.


Pandemic supplies: Suggested list is NOT all-inclusive – Use common sense to make additional preparations that suit your individual needs.

In general, have 20 weeks of all types of supplies, in excess to what you normally keep on hand for everyday living. Brainstorm for what else you think you would need if in isolation. In addition to necessities – Have things on hand to prevent boredom and keep everyone in your family from going stir crazy -- board games, playing cards, reading materials, and whatever else you like.

Public services may be in operation during an emergency, but prepare as if they won’t be.

• Disposable: Fluid resistant N95/N100 masks - standard earloop AND masks w/ face shield (min. 300 per person - 3M quality) AND Safety goggles w/ adjustable head band (min 5 pair per family member )
• If within budget – ALSO purchase an air purifying respirator (such as 3M-7800S) & extra filters (min. 30 per family member)
• Rubber boots AND rubber over- boots (min. 2 pair each family member); Large square wash basin to accommodate each pair of rubber boots (USE: bleach bath container)
• Long handled scrub brush (6 minimum)
• Heavy duty latex cleaning gloves – (minimum 12 pair per family member)
• Disposable: Tyvek coveralls , hooded w/ footies, elastic wrists and ankles, AND aprons, head dress , bouffants, shoe covers (ALL – min. 100 per family member), gloves – nitrile- (minimum 5 mil thick & in quantity – min. 10 boxes of 100 in each size per family member)
• Heavy duty garbage bags (in large quantity - for trash & noninfectious bio contaminants – USE: a makeshift toilet, emesis portal, and to collect soiled clothing and bedding before they are washed) Burn all trash.
• Biohazard bags (sm, med, lg - min. 200 each size); 2 gallon freezer bags (to put the sm-med bio bags inside once used) - if bio bags aren’t available – Buy the thickest mil contractor/trash bags possible - in various sizes and double them for use). Dig a flash latrine in the back yard or use a 55 gal metal barrel and burn all bio contaminants daily.
• Five gallon buckets - (min 20 for makeshift toilet, emesis pot)
• Kitty litter - to absorb vomit, etc. , barn lime
baking soda (min 10 extra large bags –odor elimination, wash clothes, brush teeth, etc.)
• Duct tape (in quantity - min 20 rolls), heavy plastic sheeting (visqueen - thick mil, long & wide– min 3-8 rolls)
• Non-refrigerated foods - No less than 20 week supply
• Paper plates, bowls, plastic utensils, paper towels (in quantity - min. 1000 each per family member) Use a type that will easily and completely burn.
• 1 gallon of water per person per day, in clean plastic containers. Prepare for 20 weeks.
• Extra supply of regular prescription drugs, medical supplies-(such as normal saline solution, irrigation syringe, bulb syringes, super glue, alcohol/ alcohol wipes, benzalkonium chloride wipes, peroxide, bandages, antibiotic ointment, antifungal cream, diphenhydramine cream, new skin, campho-phenique) & nonprescription meds (such as analgesics, acid reducer, antiemetic, bismuth, antidiarrheal, stool softeners, etc…) , vitamin & mineral supplements. Electrolyte replacement fluids , emetrol
• Thermometer, pulse oximeter, BP cuffs (1 per family member – know how to use it), stethoscope, incentive spirometer (1 per family member).
• Cavicide liquid, Cavicide wipes, liquid bleach (several gallons – NO ultra-brand or thickeners added ), sodium hypochlorite granules (secondary source)
• Hibiclens, liquid soap, sanitizing wipes, povidone-iodine solution
• Toilet paper, facial tissue, paper towels-(in large quantity), antimicrobial wipes , alcohol based hand sanitizer ; baby wipes, personal hygiene items (such as tampons, pads, etc), diapers, depends, USP Pharmaceutical Grade Lanolin ,chap stick, butt paste.
• Emergency radio, batteries, lanterns, flashlights, candles
• Gasoline, generator; grill, solar oven, alternative cooking devices such as BioLite stove (with kettle and grill) or similar (whatever turns your crank)
• Any type fuel required for cooking device -- propane, coleman fuel, wood chips (cheaper to buy livestock brand),
• Mosquito repellent (for mosquito borne diseases), pest spray for inside home
• Weapons – firearms, crossbows and the like---(and proper training for proficient, effective defense – otherwise it is useless), bolts, ammunition (the more, the better)
• Employ window and door security in advance (preferably inside and out- hurricane shutters, security bars, 3M window security film, thick plywood (similar but improved methods you would use to protect from hurricanes)
