Anonymous Coward User ID: 67538095 United States 01/30/2015 08:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My dad is 96 years old. He re-broke his hip and we took him to the hospital. They admitted him for observation - I didn't know that meant that dad would get stuck with the bill. After a couple of days the doctor told me that dad is too old to operate and that he needs to stay in a bed for 6 weeks and heal. They moved him to another room in a building near the hospital where he stayed for almost three weeks, under observation. Then they said he has to leave and go home. He couldn't move, he had a tube up his pee hole and I was at a loss. We were told then that because he was on observation, he had an enormous medical bill - had they done the surgery, he would have been admitted and wouldn't have had to pay it. Dad isn't rich. We (brother and 1 sister) put together funds and moved him to a rehabilitation facility where he's been for the past 3 weeks. This week, a friend of mine asked me about dad. When I told him about it, he asked how come the VA didn't take care of him. Dad flew in WWII in the South Pacific. Well, apparently the VA would have taken him and cared for him. So, $37,000 later . . . . . . . . . |

Once you are 6 years old you probably wont cost a lot to keep alive so you will get good health care because you will probably pay a lot of taxes according to actuarial tables. Then when you are 40 years old you will probably start using expensive health care so they wont let you have it. Once you are retired don't get sick because they see your death as a savings. hahahaha Did you actually hear Barrack Obama say affordable health care was affordable for you? Oh that what you thought he meant, right? You stupid fuckin asshole. User ID: 47812126 United States 01/30/2015 10:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It will fall on deaf ears for all those treasonous fuckers in Congress Quoting: Thetruthmonger Remember, theyre all exempt from the unconstitutional law deemed Obamacare Since this whole inpatient v observation bs happened to me recently (and we have private insurance, so it's NOT just Medicare it's ACA) I know that this whole issue is before the Supreme Court and if I recall correctly may be decided this March 2015. It's the whole 23 hours and inpatient or observation BS. As far as admitting, well, you can be admitted as inpatient, but it still doesn't mean your insurance will pay the bill...it has to be "acute" care for inpatient, otherwise your insurance will deny the hospital payment at inpatient rates, payment may/may not be at observation rates; just letting yeah know ahead of time. Apparently being on an IV (dehydrated from anesthesiology) and puking your guts out and being in extreme pain isn't acute ok? ??? I guess you're supposed to check yourself out after 23 hours of observation in this condition (hell just pull the IV out, WTF, have your spouse break yeah out in the wheelchair!) and/or pay the bill in full...because you're not sick enough to be considered special enough to be admitted as inpatient. I asked the hospital billing gal, so next time this happens, what am I supposed to do? Ask to be checked out at 23 hours, maybe at 5 a.m. the next morning, since I was checked in at 6 a.m. for 8:30 a.m. surgery...then what roll me out into the emergency waiting room, and IF I need to be checked back in I am? Nope, can't do that because then it's a readmission into the hospital (before 30 days) and then the hospital gets fined...the shit is real deep w/ACA. Fortunately I'm not on medicaid/medicare yet, so I'm just getting fined, but for 6 hours past the 24 hours(I was in hospital 30 hours under observation) I'm getting fined $5k. This was after (in addition to) our deductibles/out of pocket for the year (that we previously met prior to surgery) and of course monthly premiums for the "platinum" plan from husband's work (which isn't any better than medicare if you ask me). Rant off. Be careful people. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 63601926 United States 01/30/2015 10:25 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Here's something a lot of you don't know... DOCTORS CANT CHOOSE IF YOU ARE COMING IN AS AN ADMISSION OR AS AN OBSERVATION. They are told that there are federal guidelines that determine who is in as an observation and who is in as an admission. (can't walk? not grounds for admission by these guidelines) If a physician tries to make someone a regular admission and it doesn't meet these guidelines the administration changes it back to an obs. Here's a situation I deal with quite a bit.. TIAs (temporary symptoms of a stroke which reverse) are required to be an observation. Strokes can be a regular admission. Sounds easy right? The problem is when a physician sees a patient for the 1st time in the ER he can't tell if the symptoms will clear up and be a TIA or if it's permanent (a stroke). If he bills medicare for a regular admission with admission codes and the patient clears up and it's a TIA then he gets paid nothing. (because administration changes it later to an obs and he's coded it as an admission) It's a nice way for insurance and the government to not pay the doctors. |
