A scientist investigating a foreign strain of bacteria that killed a monkey last year at the Tulane National Primate Research Center near Covington has been hospitalized and a blood test indicated traces of the bacteria, officials said. Various local, state and federal agencies are working with the center to identify, isolate and mitigate and prevent further transmission of the bacteria, Burkholderia Pseudomallei


It infects humans and animals and causes the disease melioidosis. It is also capable of infecting plants.[3]



Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by a Gram-negative bacterium, Burkholderia pseudomallei, found in soil and water

. It is of public health importance in endemic areas, particularly in Thailand and northern Australia. It exists in acute and chronic forms. Signs and symptoms may include pain in chest, bones, or joints; cough; skin infections, lung nodules and pneumonia.

I live in Slidell and only heard about this after clicking over here. Most people are out at local parades and most likely didn't see the press conference.

I have family there, i live in swla. keep safe on that side.

Kind of scary considering I was told by an ER Dr. last week to go to the emergency room for all the same symptoms. I lost health benefits about 6 months ago....so did I go? No
