The failure of the American Medical system: Exposing the gruesome statistics
While researching vaccine deaths and disabilities, this article really shook me, as I do not believe doctors heal any more.

I had no idea how bad it really was...

Table 1: Estimated Annual Mortality and Economic Cost of Medical Intervention

Adverse Drug Reactions 106,000 $12 billion Lazarou (1), Suh (49)
Medical Error 98,000 $2 billion IOM(6)
Bedsores 115,000 $55 billion Zakellis(7), Barczak(8)

Surg.-Related 32,000 $9 billion AHRQ(85)
Total 783,936 $282 billion

"The most stunning statistic, however, is that the total number of deaths caused by conventional medicine is an astounding 783,936 per year. It is now evident that the American medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the US. (By contrast, the number of deaths attributable to heart disease in 2001 was 699,697, while the number of deaths attributable to cancer was 553,251.5)

"

INTRODUCTION

Never before have the complete statistics on the multiple causes of iatrogenesis been combined in one article. Medical science amasses tens of thousands of papers annually, each representing a tiny fragment of the whole picture. To look at only one piece and try to understand the benefits and risks is like standing an inch away from an elephant and trying to describe everything about it. You have to step back to see the big picture, as we have done here. Each specialty, each division of medicine keeps its own records and data on morbidity and mortality. We have now completed the painstaking work of reviewing thousands of studies and putting pieces of the puzzle together.

IS AMERICAN MEDICINE WORKING?

US health care spending reached $1.6 trillion in 2003, representing 14% of the nation’s gross national product.(15) Considering this enormous expenditure, we should have the best medicine in the world. We should be preventing and reversing disease, and doing minimal harm. Careful and objective review, however, shows we are doing the opposite. Because of the extraordinarily narrow, technologically driven context in which contemporary medicine examines the human condition, we are completely missing the larger picture.

Medicine is not taking into consideration the following critically important aspects of a healthy human organism: (a) stress and how it adversely affects the immune system and life processes; (b) insufficient exercise; (c) excessive caloric intake; (d) highly processed and denatured foods grown in denatured and chemically damaged soil; and (e) exposure to tens of thousands of environmental toxins. Instead of minimizing these disease-causing factors, we cause more illness through medical technology, diagnostic testing, overuse of medical and surgical procedures, and overuse of pharmaceutical drugs. The huge disservice of this therapeutic strategy is the result of little effort or money being spent on preventing disease.

UNDERREPORTING OF IATROGENIC EVENTS

As few as 5% and no more than 20% of iatrogenic acts are ever reported.(16,24,25,33,34)

This implies that if medical errors were completely and accurately reported, we would have an annual iatrogenic death toll much higher than 783,936. In 1994, Leape said his figure of 180,000 medical mistakes resulting in death annually was equivalent to three jumbo-jet crashes every two days.(16) Our considerably higher figure is equivalent to six jumbo jets are falling out of the sky each day...

We are fully aware of what stands in the way of change: powerful pharmaceutical and medical technology companies, along with other powerful groups with enormous vested interests in the business of medicine. They fund medical research, support medical schools and hospitals, and advertise in medical journals. With deep pockets, they entice scientists and academics to support their efforts. Such funding can sway the balance of opinion from professional caution to uncritical acceptance of new therapies and drugs. You have only to look at the people who make up the hospital, medical, and government health advisory boards to see conflicts of interest. The public is mostly unaware of these interlocking interests.

For example, a 2003 study found that nearly half of medical school faculty who serve on institutional review boards (IRB) to advise on clinical trial research also serve as consultants to the pharmaceutical industry.(17) The study authors were concerned that such representation could cause potential conflicts of interest. A news release by Dr. Erik Campbell, the lead author, said, “Our previous research with faculty has shown us that ties to industry can affect scientific behavior, leading to such things as trade secrecy and delays in publishing research. It’s possible that similar relationships with companies could affect IRB members’ activities and attitudes.”(18)"...

Several years ago the "New England Journal of Medicine" estimated that more than a million people a year are killed as a direct result of our medical system.

Merck the makers of Vioxx admitted to 100,000 deaths caused by the drug.

Actuaries saw a statical bump in deaths during the time that Vioxx was on the market and estimated that the number of deaths caused by Vioxx exceeded one million.

Sixteen percent of people admitted to a hospital are harmed by the care they receive.

Scary stuff.

True! There are times for the wonders of modern medicine!

But, I ask myself if people are being programed
to visit regularly under the guise
of health care, when it is really disease-care
which lines the pockets of an entire industry...?

Did you read about the USDA reneging on cholesterol?
Now they say it never did cause heart disease...studies show...?
Now they tell all those people whose lives and diets
were dominated for years by the bad advice
of their doctor...
not to mention dangerous anti-cholesterol drugs!!!

Yikes!!! Craziness!!!

And now studies in other countries are showing that small prostate tumor would never have killed you anyways!! Breast growths? Same thing! This is criminal!!

My Mom had to have a pace maker put in because of Vioxx. The term pace maker is not accurate, however, they can speed up her heart if it beats too slow, but they can do nothing to slow it down.

Also, she had a flu shot that almost killed her. They didn't know what was happening to her, so they removed her spleen and gall bladder and where discussing what else to remove when they realized it was ITP, an immune deficiency which presented itself and almost caused her to die right after her flu shot.

Now she can't be around anyone who is sick because it will kill her.

Had she never went to the doctor, she would live longer and her quality of life would be better.

Take this into perspective on the whole population of the US alone.

2,596,993 people die on an average year to year.

821.5 deaths per 100,000 population

that's roughly 6 people who die per 1000 born.

here's the rough total break down on the recent causes of death polling...

Heart disease: 611,105
Cancer: 584,881
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 149,205
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 130,557
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 128,978
Alzheimer's disease: 84,767
Diabetes: 75,578
Influenza and Pneumonia: 56,979
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 47,112
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 41,149

arguably the medical profession causes unintentional deaths.

where's the numbers on how many are saved ?

My brother-in-law is a surgeon, and the surgery portion is encouraged to do the best they can quickly. If they screw up or do something wrong, they will be slapped with tons of lawsuits and the surgeons are the only ones to take the blame.

Whereas if a medical doctor makes a mistake, then there is always a drug company to blame. Although I do believe many medical doctors try their best, they are not as financially responsible as most surgeons. Combine that with the fact that the pharmaceutical industry is actively harming individuals and making them worse, and you have a serious problem.

Wonderful! You have it all if you have your health.
Stay way from doctors!!!

In 25 yrs. I have had to visit once...
for stitches,
(I am a horsewoman and hence a fence-builder...one fencepost reached out and gave me a big kiss!!Ouch!!)

I sweat out the flue with blankets at first onset when my immune system is strongest, so haven't had the flue in years...like 20 years.

Did get the 'chemtrail cold' going around last year but kicked it's ass through a visit to my son, whose healing hands made me feel better with just a hug!!!

People think I look like I am in my forties, and ask me
how do I live such a healthy and exuberant life??...I tell them ...
#1 stay away from doctors!!
When you see a relatively healthy person, a friend or relative,
get bad sick or dead,
and the only thing they did different
was to start a doc's pills and surgeries, and other regimes,
well, by the time you get to be a survivor my age, you begin to understand the correlation!!

Also on my list: No cavities...not one. A life of sugar avoidance causes this! No soda pop! EVER!!! I have always been a health nut, eat a home verg garden diet with home raised meats, only a little meat though.
Well water, mountain air, lots and lots of fresh air and sunshine...and exercise like hiking!!
No nothin' wrong with this 58 year old, just living large and thanking the Lord for it every day of it!!

It does seem that surgeons are sued for malpractice more than other MD specialists,
and since they are the first line of triage in many instances, as you point out,
they get the most lawsuits and blame when something goes wrong.
Generally speaking though, most people look at doctors like they are super-human individuals,

One side effects of health care costing so much (and MUCH More now that we have odontcare), is to cause people to seek out alternative treatments. That's a very good thing and has been very good for me personally. Have you guys ever done the Castor oil pack? The Doc said I needed surgery Right Away, and I am doing this instead. So far, so good. Re: The failure of the American Medical system: Exposing the gruesome statistics
Is there any science left that is not compromised?

In the linked article, studies which show how science is the pimp of funding, and thus sorely tainted...
it is toward the end of the article...long but worth it!

Re: The failure of the American Medical system: Exposing the gruesome statistics
Take this into perspective on the whole population of the US alone.

2,596,993 people die on an average year to year.

821.5 deaths per 100,000 population

that's roughly 6 people who die per 1000 born.

here's the rough total break down on the recent causes of death polling...

Heart disease: 611,105
Cancer: 584,881
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 149,205
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 130,557
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 128,978
Alzheimer's disease: 84,767
Diabetes: 75,578
Influenza and Pneumonia: 56,979
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 47,112
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 41,149

arguably the medical profession causes unintentional deaths.

where's the numbers on how many are saved ?

I wonder how many people who were "saved" were just placed on lifetime drugs that helped them chug along for longer than without, but much shorter than had they taken charge of their own damn health and changed their diet and lifestyle?
