National organizations discourage realistic active shooter drills in schools

After the intensive A.L.I.C.E. training last fall, Tuttle-Huff talked to students who were determined to protect themselves and their classmates.

That kind of debrief can help students who take part in active shooter drills understand why they're training in such a realistic way. The goal is for students to know how to protect themselves without feeling traumatized.

But Julie Sellers, president of the Cincinnati Federation of Teachers, said that message doesn't always resonate with kids.

"Some of these active shooter drills are causing undue stress and trauma for kids, especially young children," Sellers said on Thursday.
