I actually got an inspection sticker on a Bronco that had no exhaust after the manifold. Told the mechanic that I'd just say that I pulled it off in a hollow somewhere and hadn't got around to fixing it.

Actually there are only six states that would test a VW diesel and that isn't even in all counties, and the test is just typically a visual inspection and a smoke opacity test.

The smoke test is done with the vehicle in neutral, and a probe in the exhaust pipe, as I understand the claim the VW computer is programmed to change based on it being hooked to a computer, which none of the emissions test done in the field do.

Beside, until they start giving some actual reading, the claims of, % above, something means nothing. The emission could be 1000% percent above the claimed and still not be a health risk.

Regardless, can't wait for the price to come down.

This seems to be a repeat of the Toyota attack a few years ago. Another non issue that wrecked a good company.

My guess is you will definitely see mandatory diesel emission testing soon. Just another way of padding the coffer.

I drive with a wide open exhaust cut out on my truck because I'm an asshole.

My gut feeling is that this is part of the effort to make it impossible to modify your vehicle. Not sure how it'll play out but that's just what I'm thinking.

The state of Minnesota had testing centers but found after a few years that most cars were compliant and dropped the program. What a relief that was.
