Fascinating news article from the late 19th century about people disappearing in America
Written by James Mokeller Bugby for The Atlantic Monthly

November 1879

Mysterious Disappearances

"Unless the police lines are drawn closer around the inhabitants of our large cities, the number of those who mysteriously disappear from one cause or another will become still more alarming than it is at present."

[He discusses 'disappearances' of boys and girls, men and women, young and old; many just ran away from their old life in the east and moved out west to start a new life, often with a new identity. Some went to work on ships, ending up all over the world, like Australia or the French Pacific colonies. It is a great article, you will enjoy it. Life back then had many similarities to today, at least as far as human nature.]
