Why is slavery still taught in schools?

It's part of history. Besides America was not and is not the only place slavery existed or exists. Black Folk are not the only race subjected to such barbaric practices. People are in slavery today in one form or another, especially the middle east. The issue is they focus to much attention toward it. More focus should be placed upon the advances civilization has made, and how to make the world an even better place. Stop living in the past and look to the future.

Apparently if whites aren't constantly reminded of slavery, they will reflexively enslave the nearest black person.

The same reason Wounded Knee, Camp Manzanar, and No Gun Ri are still taught in schools.

No, I don't think history should ever be omitted or forgotten. They should teach the real truth about it though, and they don't. You never hear about the Irish slaves who were the first slaves in America.

You never hear the truth about indentured servants either, or the children they gave birth to. You never hear about the true stories of why and how so many English, highland and lowland Scots, scots-irish, welsh, and Cornish, ended up here either. They also don't tell even close to the full story of blacks and natives either.

Whites are made out to be horrible, when hardly any were. All the others get a pass as victims when that is just not the truth.

Honesty would be enough instead of rewriting history or doing away with it. We wouldn't be having the racial problems we have now if they'd just be honest.

Why is history taught? They keep telling us it's so we won't repeat it, but... look at the world.

very few pay attention in history class..and the numbers attending get really small as you get into the later years of education..most have the same opinion being expressed here, the " who cares its in the past" attitude..so if they never learned it how can they not repeat it

The truth is that they were NEVER brought over on slave ships.

Blacks are the TRUE Native Americans.

To remind today's Blacks how lucky they really are, and how so many Whites died fighting to free them. I wonder how many Blacks appreciate it. By the way, I am not White.

It was the issue that brought to a head the deeper issue of state's rights, which caused the U.S. to fight a civil war, resulting in the loss of 600,000 people, and ushering in a stronger, more centralized federal government.

So if Northern Whites were fighting the civil war to "free the blacks" as you say, then Southern Whites were fighting the civil war to keep blacks enslaved? Ok.

Remove it from the history lesson(s) entirely.

Make the subject an electable one; taught in Senegal among the slave traders of old and those wo still practice slavery in 2016 and forward.
