Hey OP, did what you heard give any indication how the power would be knocked out, by whom, and/or for how long?

Was your area only to be affected?

The 'DOOM ON' high altitude EMP weapon detonation 300 miles above Manhattan Kansas would do much more than just knock out the power...I would be highly suspect over anything more than a local event, say, a reprise of the 16 APR 2013 Cali Metcalf power transformer site (17 transformers were hit) that was a coordinated attacked by 7.62x39 fire.
