Like two vertical strips lip to lip, or a big tape patch covering both lips? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74938542 I had fat surgical tape on hand (maybe an inch wide). I just put a strip from below my nostril, over my lips, to my chin. Some people go across the mouth, but that made me nervous. Last Edited by MisSpelt Rebbal on 05/22/2017 07:39 AM |

Had problems with having my mouth open sometimes and really getting dried out. They make a chin strap that you can use to hold you mouth shut. It works well, I think it is safer than tape. Do not take sleep apnea lightly. Take it from a guy who has had 5 bypasses. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74817237 Thank you for your input and I am glad you found a solution that helps you. Since I have no medical training, don't take my n of 1 to be gospel for all (or any). I snored. Even after losing the extra weight, I sounded like a bear. As the smallest person in my house, it was embarrassing. I felt stuffed up all the time. After reading the book mentioned in the OP, it made sense in my case to try it. So far, I am very happy with the results. The book discusses breathing overall. It goes into the method developed by the Ukrainian doctor Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko called the Buteyko Method. It is controversial, but I have been cured of some pretty major problems by controversial treatments when traditional medicine has left me sick and helpless. Alternative therapies are part quackery and part gold. It takes sifting and figuring out what is real and right for each individual's situation. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 25666639 United States 05/22/2017 08:12 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have been doing this for a long time now. I also have apnea and the machine won't work when the mouth is hanging open. I also had to get serious reworking of the sinuses done, surgically. Didn't cure my apnea, though, as mine seems to be more structural, and possibly central (brain damage related), but it does help a little if I forget to use the bipap, or got too tired to wash it. That thing is a royal PAIN in the whatall. |

Chin strap never worked for me - that thing just made my head feel like it was in a vice and my mouth still fell open, tried a few. I don't tape the entire mouth, just one piece of tape that I tear-off, about 1/2 inch wide, placed vertically at the center of my lips to keep them shut. I can still speak, take a drink, all that. It works fine 98% of the time. I can still also force my mouth open if I have to. I don't recommend taping the entire mouth, for safety, and also to keep from tearing the lip skin off. |

I read that putting some lubricant on the lips will help the tape pull less, but all I have are my colored gloss and I don't want to stain my pillow. Do you think skin lotion would work? |

After looking around online and on youtube, I gave it a try. It takes me a while to go to sleep and I kept waiting for the clogging to happen. It didn't. It did help the other condition. I may need to buy some more... Thank you for the reminder! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 5210902 Canada 05/22/2017 08:35 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For the last 2 nights, I have taped my mouth shut and my sleep apnea was gone! Quoting: MisSpelt Rebbal A few weeks back, I told my general doctor that I snore due to my sinuses, hoping for a referral to an Ear Nose and Throat doc. But no. They can't take my word for it, I have to FIRST pay the cardiologist his money for a sleep study. After the cardiologist confirmed that I snore like a bear, they would want me to try those machines that breath for you. Ok, that is a bit overdramatic, but I didn't want to rely on a machine to oxygenate my body. While putting off scheduling the sleep study, I ran across "The Power of Your Breath" by Anders Olson. When I read the part about using surgical tape to keep the mouth closed, I was dubious. My nose is stuffy! I'll not be able to breathe. The author insisted that after a neti pot with saline and a bit of baking soda to clear the sinuses, the closed mouth would help maintain an open airway when I breathe properly, via the nose. It works for me. For two nights, I haven't snored (according to the family) and I have slept better than I have in YEARS. I actually woke up refreshed! Does anyone else do this? There is a proper mask you can get to achieve this more safely. |

If I felt bad after the first night, I would have never done it again. I slept in! I never sleep in, because I wake up feeling terrible and can't wait to get out of bed. For me, the proof is in how I feel. |

The dentist goes over the procedure and safety. He says that if you really needed to breathe through the mouth, the tape would not stop you. If you wake up with the tape still attached, it is helping you. If you wake up with the tape loose, you should visit and ENT (ear nose and throat doctor) to figure out why you can't successfully nose breathe. According to "The Power of Your Breath" by Anders Olson, the nose becomes blocked because of mouth breathing. Mouth breathing leads to excessive breathing which leads to a lack of CO2 and the body makes mucus (which leads to narrowing of nasal passages) to prevent excess loss of CO2. I did notice that as I breathed rhythmically through my nose, my airway became clearer. Again, it is weird and was scary at first, but it worked very well for me and I will be continuing this practice.
