Any GLP users with advice on is it worth it for me to switch to "Linux Mint" as my OS instead of Windows 10?
Remember me moaning in my thread how I was sorta mislead on my Black Friday Laptop.... It's still a great laptop, 4gigs of Ram - Win 10, etc. 15.6 inch screen -

Yet, I've used Linux Mint years ago - and loved the speed it provided for my outdated Laptop -

and was just curious ---

Would Linux Mint be able to handle my Youtubing, Chromecasting, GLPing more safely? Would I be able to do my businesses spread sheets and word documents?

Since I'm sure it doesn't have Microsoft Office - is there something similar that if I sent "JanuaryReports.docx" to somebody, while I used something other than Office - would they be able to view it just fine?

Also - Would my wife be able to navigate it as she does Windows? Is Mint too "difficult?" Is there a more "user-friendly" option?

Or would it be a waste on a New Laptop?

Thanks -

Linux for use as a desktop OS , well, it still isn't ready for prime time -- it's going to be a few years at least

For now Windows is your best bet

Well it depends. Do you play games with it? If no then go for it.

Libre office is nice for office type stuff.

Run W7 Ultimate...or W10 if you clean it up.

Run Vmware in Winbloze and any other OS inside it.

If Linux screws up just minimize it and ur back in windows.

You could dual boot. I did with 7 and suse back in the day.

It was pretty cool. Kinda unstable though

So run Mint off a USB stick or VM -

(It's true browsing the web with Mint you're "You're in a Tank" basically, right? I mean... There's no need for an anti-virus, and your first 1056 ports are stealth, and auto-run software and all that jazz is coded for Windows... so it doesn't really affect Mint?)

Libre Office is a good office suite - Good as in - my customers wouldn't be able to tell the difference if I sent an attachment in an email?

Security, Speed...

Oh, and I forgot to mention I upgraded my ram to 8 Gigs.... so It's Win 10 running 8 Gigs -

How do you suggest I 'clean it up?' - I have CC cleaner and disabled a lot of Start Up apps, removed a lot of HP bloatware... etc -- anything else I Can do?

4 GB Ram is way too low for Win 10. It will keep swapping and make your system frustratingly slow and it will get worse over time.

You can do everything you listed and more with Mint Mate or cinnamon (needs more resources). Just download and try Mint's live usb/cd boot to see how you like it on that computer. live is a nondestructive boot just to check it out. You can install Libre Office for spreadsheets and docs if you have to have a desktop version on your system (it can read and write out MS Office documents) . Otherwise just use Outlook.com (for online versions or excel and word) or Google docs via your gmail.

Mint Mate will run faster than Win 10 on your computer's specs. If you are a gamer stick with MS Win 10, but definitely add more memory (min 8 GB, ideally 16).

Also pay attention to privacy settings of Win 10. If you run Win 10 with the default install options you'll have absolutely zero privacy. Win 10 reports pretty much everything you do on that computer back to MS. Get into Win 10 privacy settings and see it for yourself.

Also, never ever use the same browser to login to your email on one tab and do other stuff on other tabs during the same browser session. Once you login to something (gmail, yahoo, microsoft...), everything you do on all other tabs are also tracked under the same userid. Use one browser (ie Opera) for email activity only. Install and use other browsers (chrome, firefox whatever) for internet surfing and do not login to your email or bank or other important accounts with the browsers you use for surfing.

you can try different browsers from this list...

Dump Windows for Linux and you *will* be sorry ...

No "flavor" of Linux is even close to being ready for prime time --

unless you are an uber-nerd who enjoys wasting many hours of precious time on every little problem you will have with that mess of an "OS" ...

Go to the control panel, administrative tools, ad remove programs you're not using anymore. Delete all temporary internet files from your browser and the DLL cache and anything system mechanic will do all this for you if you want to try it. Delete all duplicate files etc etc etc.

Be sure to back up your Windows install first -- it's very likely a Linux "dual boot" will make it unbootable

and GRUB problems are a nightmare to fix ... 25 complicated steps to repair things, whereas in Windows it'd be two or three easy ones

Nonsense ...

I just installed Linux Mint 19.1 on an old computer with 2 Gb RAM that was struggling to run Windoze 10 ...

Even with the Cinnamon desktop it's lightning fast, and this while running off an old traditional hard drive -- with an SSD, it should run perfectly

One pleasant surprise is that it was easy to automatically install the PIA VPN , last time I tried doing that with Mint two years ago it was very complicated , and I could never get it to work, and gave up on it after that.

But this time it seems much better.

It just took less than 10 minutes to install a dual-boot -- it's so good I may just take Win10 off completely

One thing I don't like about Linux is that the firewall isn't enabled by default -- you have to remember to do that yourself
