Homeless people need an ID to get into a shelter.

yeah well that's the way it is.

if you want to make it even more fun remember that you must be 18 to go to a shelter and you can't rent a hotel or motel unless you're 18 or an apartment or anything so all those kids freeze to death.

sometimes runaways are high school kids with jobs whose parents are drug addicts or some other abuse.

But requiring ID to vote is racist...

This is a huge problem as majority of the homeless are mentally ill and getting and keeping an ID would be hard for them to do.

Sad but very true. Shelters are completely in it for numbers and profit these days. Name names. We all need to do something about this asap because it is part of something bigger. Starts where you can't see it.

Reakon getting homeless vetted is a safety thing for the Carers least if they sign up it costs nothing but everyone’s accountable upon entry

Sadly I hear of lots of sexual abuse happening under cps protection.

Sadly any place where kids can go to get help is also a place where real predators will hang out.

if you have an ID then they can run a background check for outstanding warrants. they did that at the shelters for the hurricanes this year

arrested people for bullshit tickets while they are fleeing for their lives

I understand there is a safety concern,

like I said why not a temporary registration system so that they can still track people as they come through. make them take a photo - cost nothing and fill out some paper work.

This can even lead into a positive step to help get these people on the right track.

I know there are those that do not want to be found or tracked and this would deter them from getting to a shelter well it already is anyway...

cant sleep in certain areas, built up areas. rules against lying down. they destroy their tents etc.

the governments are making the homeless starve or freeze to death. its the governments at fault 100%, they dont care.

its rough on the streets, ive heard of them being raped or stabbed etc. most have a small dog and i dont blame them for that, the added protection. even other homeless could stab you with a needle over turf, begging spots.

children can get raped in homes sadly, one of my family was.

The shelter system in my city only allows people a two week stay. In two weeks staff expect them in employment+ apartment.

I volunteer at a local Food Pantry. The homeless need to have some form of ID in order to get free food as well

as far as i am aware, the shelters here are a nightly deal - be back by a certain time to claim a bed otherwise its the street. if you have kids and homeless its slightly better. we have one shelter that will work with you to get you into someplace permanent but from what i understand its a one time deal.

these places are definitely not safe if you are a woman but it beats the streets if its 30 degrees outside or less. i watched a documentary last night about affordable housing that very much infuriated me.

according to NPR (the reporter that was doing the story) the city of McKinney Tx, fought tooth and nail to KEEP a affordable housing PROJECT OUT OF MCKINNEY. the city council, the Mayor even the Governor at that time ( Doc was from 2014)so i think this would be Rick Perry. the developers tried to get access to the mayor and the governor and were told that they had to hire a NAMELESS CONSULTANT for access to the governor so they complied but were never allowed to know the NAME of said consultant. the developer got caught in a corruption STING ( it sounded to me like entrapment to shut down the project) which tey were convicted and the project shut down in the end. there was an interview with a Soccer mom in a very nice subdivision who infuriated me the most. " they arent in the SAME CLASS AS US" was her quote. the documentary was called "Poverty in america 2017" its available to watch for free on YT.

it's probably hard to identify dead homeless people.

an ID could help first responders, and that's usually all an ID is for anyway.

It gets cold in the winter where I live, really cold. I dunno, I always figured I'd pack myself a bindle start walking south if for some reason I ever ended up homeless.

Honestly I think a lot more homeless are migratory than people would believe. It takes less than 2 weeks to wal from Chicago to Georgia. Head south for the winter, then head North for the summer to panhandle.

i did a lot of work for a shelter growing up and the ID at the door is for A.) double checking that this isn't some asshole from 1973. B.) double checking that this isn't america's most wanted C.) making sure they're 18 D.) we get compensation ($8) by the state

If they don't have an ID there is the yard, which has a heated tent, but they don't get the extra services (i.e. weight room, pool, shower, tv, etc. and the schooling program.

however I've learned in different areas that homeless shelters vary dramatically from town to town.

I had a customer in Chicago that was a homeless shelter and they literally were just an empty building with bums in sleeping bags on the concrete floor.

In Nashville, TN the homeless shelter doesn't let you leave, so basically if you leave you can't come back for 90 days. The bums say this is because they get paid per day you're there, and they don't want you to get a job or nothing like that.

In Seattle, WA the homeless shelter in the 90s was empty because it had a notorious bedbug problem, but now its overflowing. They say there's 25k homeless in first hill alone. (downtown)

I got a good chuckle out of this.

No wonder homeless people piss and shit on society.

At least give them a way to commit painless suicide as that seem to be all that is allowed to them.

It's for their "Basic Intake." Anytime a Community Block Services Grant is in use, (for services like commodities, utilities and rent assistance, etc.), a Basic Intake Form must be used.

It is required as long as gov money is used for funding.

If you go to a food pantry and it has USDA commodities to give, they will have to do a Basic Intake Form on you before you can qualify for the food. Privately donated food comes with no such requirement.

All types of community outreach services are doled out this way. Gov-funded must have a "means testing" performed, privately-funded doesn't - unless the private org has its own rules to make sure it goes to the most needy.

At least our Soup Kitchen is all donated. I have volunteered for them over the years. It has been family run basically since it started. Hats off to those ladies.

I have a friend who was living in a warehouse in New Orleans when Katrina hit. He didn't have a birth certificate, because his mother was a hippie when she had him in upstate NY. He worked and drove a car, and was always getting hit with tickets for driving without a license, but he couldn't get one because he was off the books, so to speak.

He moved to California after being displaced from Katrina, and he had rotting teeth and a hernia. He got into some mission run by the Masons in LA and they fixed his hernia, fixed his teeth, resolved his ID issues and put him in an apartment. He has a medical marijuana permit and the dispensary is around the corner. He has his OWN PLACE in a new building in downtown LA. He gets disability even though he never worked on the books.

I have been thinking that becoming an incurable alcoholic in California is the key!

I decided not to get personal because I suspect she is on the dope...

Does anybody know how shelters deal with dope heads?

I would think they just send em to the rehab/detox so dopers just avoid shelters probably she was just giving me the pg-13 excuse for herself.
