Can Anybody Help Me with A "Grout" Question?
Well, the long and short of it is that we have been without a working kitchen for a week now!

The hose or connection, or something broke and we had to replace the sink cabinet and all those hoses. Soooo, I figure I might as well get a "NEW KITCHEN" out of the deal!

Merry Christmas, right?!!

So now we've finished putting up new tiles behind the sink, and I just finished grouting (I'm better at it than my husband, he has NO patience for small work!). So now all my tiles are covered in grout!

I'm wondering if someone can tell me how soon I can rinse them off so the grout is only in the spaces between them, like it's supposed to be, instead of smeared all over the whole surface.

Thank you all for the help!

It might be a "merry Christmas" after all if this gets done today or tomorrow.

Depends if it grout haze or actual grout that is covering the tiles. Haze remover is bought at your local home improvement store. You are supposed to wipe is clean with a grouting sponge, let is setup for and hour to two hours and then polish it with a cotton/linen rag. Did you remove the bulk of the grout when you applied it ?

a grout sponge is needed and be careful not to remove the grout from in between the tiles as you wipe in one direction.

Yes, I removed quite a bit. But there's still a "haze" or covering of grout over all the tiles, not just the grout lines where I ultimately want the grout to stay.

I did ALL the grouting on our floors when we installed the tile in this house, but that was 18 years ago!

I was quite a bit younger, AND I really don't remember all the details of what I did then!

I know I have to rinse them with that big yellow sponge, once the grout has a chance to "cure," or whatever it is doing - setting up, I guess in between the tiles - but I was wondering if all the grout actually ON the tiles will rinse off then, or if I should try to get most of it off now.

Be sure to use a matching silicone seal between backsplash and countertop...not regular grout for the 2 hard surfaces..

They are all about right.

Have tiles in your shower?

Scrub with a green or blue scotch-brite pad...

Get some automotive paste wax and rub on the tiles.

A small orbital buffer to remove...

Less cleaning.

Wasn't it the "grout" who stole Christmas?

I'd be really careful with that, OP. And check your
presents under the tree if you don't believe me.

cheers

Re: Can Anybody Help Me with A "Grout" Question?
A little late to the party but,
Don't wait if you've already applied your grout
For starters the tile finish/material and grout colour make a difference.
Some tiles will stain if you don't clean them right away
If it's fairly porous, seal it first or use grout release and try not to get any in the joints.
Keep your grout the consistency of peanut butter, too loose (wet) and it'll sag/drip down the wall and all your joints will be low after washing, Plus it'll be a total pita to wash because you'll drag grout out of the joints annnd it'll look like crap.
Too tight (dry) it won't go deep enough in the joints and you'll be working too hard to be efficient.
If you get a good consistency you can wash it off w/a damp (not dripping) sponge right away, you don't need to wait, as long as you keep the wiping diagonally and don't press into the joints, just let the sponge lift the grout off w/little or no pressure.
Don't over wet, you can wash the colour out of the grout and wind up w/darker or lighter sections.
Some tile will scratch if you use sanded grout, less than 1/8th inch joint use non sanded. For a backsplash you can bend that rule but clean up kinda sux because there's no abrasive from the sand which helps remove the excess.
Wipe in one direction starting in a corner, overlap the last washed section by nearly half your sponge. Flip your sponge use the other side for a single pass, you can work your way across an entire wall and not need a final wash if you do it right.
If you happen to wait too long and your grout burns itself onto the tile, the best way I've found to clean up is patience and a non abrasive scrub pad followed by sponge and possibly working the joints till they're smooth/even.
G'Luck annnnd Merry Christmas back at ya.
