Flash Flood in India on July 27 2019 01:27 PM (UTC).

Around 700 people have been rescued in India after flooding left them trapped on a train near Mumbai. Helicopters, boats and diving teams were deployed by the Indian authorities after the Mahalaxmi Express became stranded on Friday night close to the town of Vangani. Passengers told news agency IANS they were ordered to stay on board but had had no food or water for 15 hours.

Weeks of monsoon flooding in South Asia has killed over 600 people. Images released by the NDRF show passengers being rescued in rubber boats. Indian authorities said a temporary camp had been set up nearby with food and medical supplies. Nine pregnant women were reportedly among those taken to safety. A spokesperson for the train operator also said alternative travel arrangements had been arranged for passengers affected.

Most areas in the nearby towns of Badlapur, Ulhasnagar, Vangani have been submerged as heavy rains battered the region this week, swelling local rivers. Other transport has also been hit by flooding in Mumbai, with 11 flights canceled and several others diverted by from the city's airport....

Tropical Storm in Japan on July 27 2019 08:07 AM (UTC).

Torrential rains continue to pummel parts of central Japan as Tropical Storm Nari heads north through the Tokai region. Rain clouds around the storm clashing with moist air from the south are bringing localized downpours to wide areas from the Kinki to the Kanto-Koshin regions. The wind damaged roofs and windows over a strip two kilometers long. Weather officials warn that areas around the storm and its predicted course can expect rainfall of 100 to 200 millimeters by Sunday morning. They also warn of strong winds and high waves in the Kinki and Tokai regions, as well as on the Izu Islands south of Tokyo. ...

Biological Hazard in Svalbard and Jan Mayen on July 28 2019 05:20 AM (UTC).

Researchers have found more than 200 reindeer that died of hunger on Norway's Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, public broadcaster NRK reported on Saturday. The catastrophe happened due to climate change and lack of food, and has never been this big, said three researchers from the Norwegian Polar Institute.

The institute has mapped the wild reindeer stock on Svalbard for 40 years as it is a key species for understanding the tundra ecosystem, Xinhua news agency reported. "It is scary to find so many dead animals. This is a terrifying example of how climate change affects nature. It is just sad," said researcher Ashild Onvik Pedersen....

Freak storms and flash flooding following last week's heatwave in Italy claimed three lives this weekend, including a young woman caught up in a mini-tornado near Rome's Fiumicino airport. The 26-year-old woman was driving home at around 2:00 am Sunday when the mini-tornado lifted her car and sent it crashing against a railing. The highly localized winds tore up trees and scattered debris across the zone it hit....

Extreme Weather in Schenectady, New York USA on July 29 2019 03:52 AM (UTC).

A fast-moving storm late Sunday afternoon knocked out power to more than 9,000 customers in Schenectady County, according to National Grid. The storm hit just after 4 p.m. and brought heavy rain to the area. Downed trees and wires were reported. On Erie Boulevard, a tree appeared to have been hit by lightning and then took down a power pole. One downed tree damaged the iconic Mike's Hot Dogs sign.

A video later circulated showing water going through a portion of nearby Rivers Casino. The storm also damaged Freedom Park in Scotia, forcing Sunday evening's concert there to be postponed, Glenville Supervisor Chris Koetzle said on Twitter. As a result of that incident, Erie between Union and Nott was to be closed for a time...

Nuclear Event in Russia on July 29 2019 01:00 PM (UTC).

The source of a gigantic, mysterious leak of radioactive material that swept across Europe in 2017 has been traced to a Russian nuclear facility, which appears to have been preparing materials for experiments in Italy. The leak released up to 100 times the amount of radiation into the atmosphere that the Fukushima disaster did. Italian scientists were the first to raise the alarm on 2 October, when they noticed a burst of the radioactive ruthenium-106 in the atmosphere. This was quickly corroborated by other monitoring laboratories across Europe.

Georg Steinhauser at Leibniz University Hannover in Germany says he was "stunned" when he first noticed the event. Routine surveillance detects several radiation leaks each year, mostly of extremely low levels of radionuclides used in medicine. But this event was different. "The ruthenium-106 was one of a kind. We had never measured anything like this before," says Steinhauser. Even so, the radiation level wasn't high enough to impact human health in Europe, although exposure closer to the site of release would have been far greater.

The Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Security in Paris soon concluded that the most probable source of the leak was between the Volga River and Ural mountains in Russia. This is where Russia's Mayak facility is located. The site, which includes a plant that processes spent nuclear fuel, suffered the world's third most serious nuclear accident in 1957...

About 15,000 National Grid customers were without power Monday night after thunderstorms swept through eastern Schenectady County, northeastern Albany County, and south-central Saratoga County. Volcano Activity in Russia on July 31 2019 04:56 AM (UTC).

During our pilot expedition to the northern Kurile Islands, we observed the volcano during 16-20 and 26-27 July 2019: Ebeko's northern crater was very active, almost constantly degassing and producing ash-rich eruptions at irregular intervals of typically few hours.

About half of them consisted in small to moderate, but passive ash venting, while the others were explosions that generated ash plumes of typically 1-2 km height and drifting / slowly dissipating rather long distances (few tens of km) mostly towards the NW.

Due to the lack of significant rain lately, the extremely fine-grained brown-gray ash itself seems to cover much of the northern part of the island. Near the volcano (within approx. 2 km), it forms a deposit about 1 cm thick. Ebeko's stronger explosions were sometimes noisy and ejected abundant blocks, some of which were incandescent during the night....
