Are you serious?? Amazon, paypal, Sprint, Wells Fargo, had to speak with reps and all had accents and bad english WTF!!!
You have got to be kidding me!!

Is the joke on me or what? Its bad enough having to call one of these million dollar companies to gripe or grieve about a valid issue, but when you get switched arouund to different departments and have to repeat all your identifying info like name, address, social, pet name, favorite color, 4 digit pin code just to get a fucking rep to pull up your account and every got dman one has a indian accent and can not sepak very clear english it starts to make me say what the fuck is going on??

They are like children trying to handle adult queries and giving you conflicting information from department to departnment.

Paypal - had money in account and could not transact. Called them and was told by robot that there was a 2 hour wait to speak with a rep.

rep calls back 2 hours later and is foreign and can not solve my query

amazon - sent 10 emails trying to get an issue resloved, got nothing but run around thru emails, finally called the phone and got handed to 3 differnent departments all persons I spoke with were foreign and not very helpful or clear with their english

wells fargo - reps told me theycould not credit my account after a mistake they made. I told them I am the guy that will come stand out front with protest signs are you sure you don't want to correct your mistake?? They played snooty and upitty until I actually showed up with protest signs and then they were very eager to help

I don't know what th fuck has happned but trying to resolve an issue now on the phone with so called american million dollar corporations is a daunting and frustrating experience and very counter productive.

Have to spend 3 hours on the phone trying to convince a foreginer to credit my account for 35 bucks after being passed around to 3 different departments all of which were people answering the phone with accents. men and women.

Then I ask for a supervisor and the fucking supervisor has an even more distinct foregin accent, I am like is this really happening???

Comcast cable not much better, well they don't have so many accents but their service sucks and you pay maximum price for shit channels and slow internet.

what happened to america they got it all twisted and tangled.

can we just get on with thebusiness of rounding up these pedophiles and bring american ethics and good business standards back.

wasted hours this week trying to resolve issues and am exhausted from all the phone slapping and will now take the rest of the night off.

sorry fellow americans rant over, this is a night mare trying to get remedies out of these million dollar companies and all their foreign accented workers.

I am the lsat guy who would ever hate on a person for having an accent, but damn the last time I checked I lived in america and all these companies I do business with do not seem to value having real americans with real americn voices answer their phones and help customers with issues.

fucking sucks

have a great night fellow americans!

When I have to call Amazon I ask for the call to be transferred to the United States. So sick of customer service reps overseas.

Chances are the call center you reached was located in Guadalajara, Mexico. Most of those companies you named have call centers in both Philippines and Mexico.

Filipinos don't have a heavy or thick accent, unlike Indians or Mexicans. You probably wouldn't even be able to tell that you're talking to someone in Philippines.

Don't worry, I'm sure they get tired of having to deal with inbred racist rednecks like yourself. Hell, I even I can't understand some people from New England or the Deep South because of your accents. Speak English dude, not Hicksville, Kentucky.

BTW - I'm an American and can tell where most people are from just by listening to their accent.

I stopped years ago. I have no TV, cable and soon I'm disconecting the land line and AT and fuck. I will stay only with credit card companies who pay me to use the card. I have a Pay pal account but wouldn't never put cash IN, I never heard of that. I'll probably cancel them as well. The answer to corporate america from me is fuck you.

Are you really posting from the Philippines?

I was in the call center industry for over 20 years.

Convergys is one of the biggest BPO’s utilizing Filipino call centers, and the call center industry is probably the largest industry in the Philippines.

I know from personal first hand experience how Filipino employees are hired and ranked.

With exception of the highest paid English speaking Filipinos, you most positively, absolutely can tell when you are speaking with someone from the Philippines. Of the tens of thousands of Filipinos working in call centers, only a small percentage speak English sufficiently well that their accent is nearly absent. The vast majority have a strong, pronounced accent.

However, it’s true that a Filipino’s ability to pronounce and enunciate English words is more readily understood than someone from India or Mexico who has the same English speaking ability.

I simply take issue with your blanket statement that implies most Filipinos speak near-flawless English. My 20+ years in the call center industry says otherwise.

Anytime I have to call customer support, I can tell if they're in Philippines or Mexico by their accent. Most call centers in Bangalore, India are already gone, since Indian tech workers are already in the US on H1B visas.

If it's Philippines, I speak some tagalog (native langauge) to them, such as "Magandang umaga, kamusta?" (good morning, how are you?). If I detect a Spanish accent, it's "Buenos dias, como esta?"

They have to speak English on phone due to their rules.

It's amazing how far they will go to help you solve your problem if you treat them like humans. Imagine how tough your life would be if you work 10-12 hrs per day, 6 days a week and only make $300 USD/month.

Your social engineering skills really suck. You personify the "ugly American" mentality. Narcissism and anger don't solve problems, kindess and understanding go a lot farther.

Would you rather talk to Shaniqua in the US who works at DMV or other government bureacracy or a person who works hard to support their family?

Shaniqua ain't got time for your shit.

Yes, I've been living in the Philippines (Cabanatuan) for over 2 years now. Cabanatuan is where the Japanese held American POW's during WW2 from the Bataan Death March. Watch the movie "The Great Raid", it is historically accurate.

Convergys is one of dozens of BPO's operating in the Philippines. True, the less educated Filipinos have a little more accent. At least it's easier to understand them compared to the heavy "British English" Hindus.

Any 1st level person in a call center is just about useless, as they have to follow a script. If you go beyond that script it requires a supervisor. This is true in any country or culture. I was an IT Director/Senior Engineer and worked with people literally from all over the world.

Treat them with a little kindness instead of anger and you'd be surprised how much more willing they are to help you out. The anger/yelling won't get you the results you want. It's basic Social Engineering 101 skills. Talk to them at their level, bonus points if they're female, as you can use their "motherly instinct" to your advantage.

I asked them are you, "In Philippines" or "Guadalajara" and speak a little of their native language. This makes it personal for them and they will go out of their way since you showed respect and kindness towards them. Getting angry, yelling and complaining and you make things more difficult on yourself.

Nationality or ethnicity aren't the biggest factors, it's showing respect for the person earning $300/USD a month. As an IT Director, I learned how to use social engineer to one's advantage. Set aside your pride or anger and relate to the other person's situation. It makes a big difference. If you treat them as a friend instead of adversary, they will go above and beyond what is required to help you out.

This is true no matter the nationality or ethnicity. Using social engineering techniques you personalize the person at call center to your situation and use that to your advantage to get your problem resolved.

The saying, "Honey attracts more flies than vinegar". I use social engineering to my advantage to get what I want, including in contract negotiations. It's all part of Sun Tzu's, "Art of War" tactics.

AgentMIB, you have as much bias in this matter as the OP. You live and work in the Filipino call center industry, so of course you’re going to be sensitive to criticism of same.

I can identify with you because I have a strong call center background and I know that working conditions for Filipinos can be gruesome. Many have to take train rides from 2 and 3 hours away, and the call centers have (dirty and unhygienic) sleeping areas for them, so employees stay there for days at a time. Some call center conditions are so awful that employees wear diapers because they are packed like sardines and soil themselves because they aren’t provided an opportunity to use a bathroom. They earn from $300 to $800 per month (depending on their English speaking ability), which is a foreign language to them.

On the other side, here in the States, the average American is constantly forced to deal with overseas call center reps that truly are difficult to understand, and who’s limited English causes them to misunderstand and misinterpret. The majority of BPO employees are forced to utilize scripts and are forbidden from actually thinking, so they come across as mindless, unthinking robots. Moreover, the call center reps are penalized for transferring or escalating calls, further frustrating and angering the American customer who can’t get their issue issue resolved, or it takes an eternity to get it resolved because of the language barrier, scripting, non-thinking, and refusal to escalate the call. Furthermore, a massive number of jobs here have been displaced with low-paid foreigners, directly impacting the livelihoods of many Americans, thus amplifying the hostility against foreigners.

Whereas, you’re a traveled, educated, experienced, and more intelligent person than the average American consumer who has little or no daily experience working with foreigners who are certainly not familiar with the working conditions overseas, and have no frame of reference of any kind in dealing directly with people from other countries. You’re simply assuming people like the OP are just a low-IQ racist rednecks.

I see it from BOTH perspectives.

I have empathy AND anger both for and against both sides.

You’re doing a fantastic job being empathetic in favor of the Filipinos you work with. I guess I’m saying try to be more empathetic in favor of the Americans whose dollars are employing those overseas call centers that displaced American jobs.

Thanks.

I’ve simply had the advantage of more than 20 years of directly experiencing both sides of the argument. They both have valid arguments, but they both also suffer from some bias (although completely understandable), as well as some blindness to the unknown circumstances and situation of the other.

I bank with a company called Frost. They're pretty amazing for being bankers. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year I can call and instantly speak with an American. Accounts free too if you keep over a grand in there. All the ATM'S accept checks and cash and can be used as tellers. The app is really great too. You're right about everything else, a lot of companies don't give a crap, what can you really do about it? They already have your money, they'll tell you to kick rocks and laugh. It's disgusting.
