First: I have known 2 people (maybe more) in my life on Section 8. One is a mother of 4 who works her butt off and could not survive without it. Has wonderful kids who are smart and polite. And the mom dreams of starting her own business. The second person I know is a woman who grew up in a horrible ghetto with a drug addicted mom who died of AIDS. She became a single mom herself. Worked like a dog, got a college degree and now is a successful homeowner with a dynamite job. Second: The people who receive the help have to jump thru all types of hoops to get it. Fill out endless forms, meet deadlines, wait in lines. Constantly follow-up, etc. The LANDLORD/SLUMLORD who actually GETS the money doesn't have to do CRAP! And they usually DON'T. They get the money straight from the government so if the tenant has issues with things they don't even return the calls half the time. Additionally, they charge almost double the rent when the government is paying for it. And lastly, the program needs to be changed to GIVE the money to the people who are using it and help them buy homes that they can actually afford, even if it is a trailer. That would be a better use of the money and I am sure that if the people on the receiving end had a stake in it they would do much better than the way things are done currently. Just my 2 cents. |

(more specifically, blacks). Quoting: Lacey Underall This program was started when Julian Castro was in charge of HUD under Obama. They wanted to gather racial makeup information about certain housing areas, and if they determined that there was too many white people living there, they would put Section 8 housing in these areas, and put minorities there, because they never had the ability to live in a rich neighborhood. Which raises a lot of questions. Are they subsidizing, one very expensive house, when they could have gotten 6 or 8 cheaper houses in a lower income area (middle class). Who will be paying the HOA fees? If the new "Section 8 residents, trash the property, which they are very likely to do, what recourse will the HOA have against HUD? I had hoped this program would be discontinued when Obama left office, but apparently, it has not. First, I didn't see the person you responded to making any racial statements in this thread, so how can you assume that their opinion is racially biased? Second, do you have any evidence that Section 8 was originally for white people as in something I can actually read? I just spent some time just now doing some research and see no such thing. Also, from what I see section 8 has always been about rental housing and never about purchasing houses. Section 8 refers to the fact that it is Section 8 of the Housing Act of 1937. "Section 8 of the Housing Act of 1937 (42 U.S.C. § 1437f), often called Section 8, as repeatedly amended, authorizes the payment of rental housing assistance to private landlords on behalf of approximately 4.8 million low-income households, as of 2008,[1] in the United States." [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] "The Act was amended again in 1974 to create Section 8. This new law signified a switch in focus. Instead of developing and managing public housing, it sought to help low-income people who were spending too large a percentage of their earnings on housing. Federal funds now paid a share of rent in units renters chose on the open market. Since 1974, legislation has refined and restructured the Section 8 program several times."
