We Intercepted A Tornado in Illinois Tonight & Tracked It Until It Hit Taylorville, IL - Video Links Added
My wife and I, both certified storm spotters, started monitoring a supercell on radar as it passed west of Vandalia, IL, tonight. It intensified rapidly, developing a solid tornado signature on our radar and a Tornado Warning was issued by the NWS almost immediately. We paralleled the storm's course north on Highway 51 until we hit Oconee, then turned west to intercept it at Highway 16. It was a long-track twin-funnel tornado that we tracked until it hit Taylorville, IL, causing heavy damage. We started a grid SAR pattern in town. No casualties that we ran into, but a lot of homes were severely damaged.

We just now got back home (00:30). We have pictures and video that I will post in the morning.

If there are any GLP people in Central Illinois, I hope you are all doing okay tonight.

Good job!

"Taylorville"?! I'm south of that in Belleville. We didn't get the storm here like they said we would (par for the course-weather guessers)

Also a storm spotter/HAM. Long in the tooth ARC Mass Care coordinator, LOG Spec, DA Spec. GLA Spec. Very inactive due to vehicle crash several years ago.

Sorry to hear you got laid up. We're very involved with severe weather and disaster response. We started to do a block-by-block search for victims in town, but got reassigned further out of town. This tornado was taking a very northward track instead of the usual WSW to ENE tracks you normally see.

Not odd, per se. "Uncommon" would probably be a better description. It doesn't happen every year, but I can recall a few instances over the past 30 years or so where we would get tornadic supercells in Indiana one day followed by snow the next day.

I thought I might be interested in shooting tornado video till one flew right by my house (an f3) and then blew apart the Lowes home improvement store! I took that as a sign to stay away from those things!

I'm straight north about 60 miles west of Chicago and some pretty hellacious thunder storms with high wind and hail went through our area this evening. No damage here, but the rains pretty much got rid of the 12 inches of snow we got earlier in the week.

It got windy here and stormy, thunder and such.
Something blew down the side of the house and could be heard on the inside of it, we have thick wooden siding and brick on it.
It came and went then came back and went again over and over in bursts.

OP I'm a survivor of the April 3, 1974 outbreak. The tornado that went thru our neighborhood was rated on the old Fujita scale as a 5. I missed out as Dr Ted Fujita and Greg Forbes were part of the damage survey team I would have loved to have met them!

I do go out and chase occasionally but hard to do here in Ohio valley with limited visibility at times and a lot of trees and other obstructions. Someday I'd like to go into the plains states or maybe into NE Colorado when things crank up there.

I have fun being a weather nerd! :)

Vandalia was never at risk from this storm. The track started west of there by 20 to 30 miles.

I was 8 when that outbreak happened, and a multiple vortex tornado went through Parker City, Indiana, which was very close to where we lived at the time. We were driving and got to the damage zone before first responders did. I was fascinated by the destruction, and I've been a weather nerd ever since. Got my NWS Skywarn certification as soon as I could when I became an adult.

Chasing in the plains states is amazing, but central Illinois and northern Indiana are't bad. They're pretty flat. I'm planning on buying a drone that we can use to get visibility above tree lines.

All kinds of stories from April 3rd 74 I'll never forget that day! Seeing well built brick houses completely vaporized where the only thing left were the poured foundations and some plumbing pipes left such an impression on me!

I used to live in Indy and had better luck there being able to see better when trying to intercept!

Based on the somewhat recent history I need to retire to Moore OK as the tornado's seem to come to you there won't have to chase!

Our videos of the Taylorville tornado in Illinois yesterday. Twin-funnels that eventually merged to form the wedge that hit Taylorville.

The inflow into this storm was intense, as you can no doubt hear. Made it difficult to hold the camera steady.

It gets more difficult to see as it gets darker, but lightning flashes and transformer explosions on the ground still provide glimpses.

In one video you'll hear how my wife and I work together as a team in the field, and in another one you'll actually see my ugly mug, if ever so briefly.

Thanks for the thumbs ups and the karma! If you really want to do this, contact your local National Weather Service and ask about storm spotter training, if you haven't already. It's a free 2-hour class that will teach you what to watch for and how to observe safely.

WOW! Excellent! Those night videos are just wild! Amazing seeing the lightning illuminate the lowered cloud base/wall cloud and the funnel!

I've never done anything at night like that I'm too chicken!Years ago driving home on 465 south side of Indy I heard a warning go out south of me and sure enough I started seeing a lot of power flashes but not much lightning didn't see the funnel.

It's a lot safer to go out at night these days with radar software that uses GPS to display your position over the radar image. Plus there are some old-school techniques like always keeping the inflow to your back so you know the tornado is in front of you, even if you can't see it.

Glad you're enjoying the videos. cool2

I am sure there will be more around this area, when the wife is home. Good luck op

Yes, it is unfortunate that video and photos don't convey the true experience. My wife's low-light option only works on photos, not video. But my dashcams pick up on IR, so they were able to catch some things her camera didn't.

Going to take me hours to sort through both front and rear dashcam footage, however.
