Michigan farmers blast Trump trade policies amid new Chinese tariffs
EAST LANSING – Frustrated Michigan farmers blasted the Trump administration's trade policies Monday, hours after China announced new tariffs on $60 billion in U.S. imports.

"The noose is getting tighter," said Jim Byrum, president of the Michigan Agri-Business Association.

"We have lost market opportunities. We're not shipping soybeans around the world like we normally would. We're not shipping them to China. China was our biggest soybean consumer, and they're not moving."

China was also the biggest opportunity for Michigan producers to sell pork, "and they're not buying because of the tariffs," Byrum said.

"The new Chinese tariffs ... it's going to hurt even more."

They said they are increasingly concerned that the U.S. is losing its reputation as a consistent and reliable supplier of farm products. Not only are new opportunities being lost, but existing customers are finding new suppliers and may never return, they said.

Nobody wins in a trade war," said Ken Nobis, senior policy adviser for the Michigan Milk Producers Association. "It's a tax on U.S. citizens."

Michigan doesn't send many dairy products to China, but the state of Washington does, and its inability to ship to China results in higher U.S. supplies and depressed prices, Nobis said.

Kathy Maurer, financial and international marketing director for the Michigan Soybean Association, said, "China is our largest customer," and she expects the impact of the recently announced tariffs to be "very dramatic."

"We are now currently in a fight for the family farm," she said.

Like East Lansing is a haven of Trump support anyway.
Might as well ask Detroiters what they think.

Why do people even post such stupidity.?

Facts About Michigan Agriculture

There are about 10 million acres of farmland in Michigan and the state is home to 52,194 farms.

The food and agriculture industry contributes $104.7 billion annually to the state’s economy.

Michigan's food and agriculture system is a large portion of this state’s workforce. Total employment resulting from this sector is 923,000 which accounts for about 22 percent of the state’s employment.

Michigan produces over 300 commodities on a commercial basis including tart cherries, blueberries, dry beans, floriculture products, and cucumbers for pickles.

Michigan farms and the commodities they produce account for $13 billion of the overall total.

Field crops have the greatest economic impact at $5.72 billion, followed by livestock including dairy with an economic impact of $4.73 billion. The total economic impact of nursery and landscape production is $1.20 billion.

The economic impact of the fruit and vegetable production is $758 million and $673 million respectively.

In 2015, Michigan exported $2.8 billion in food and agricultural products. Michigan’s top export markets are Canada, Japan, China, Thailand, and Mexico.

Michigan's top agricultural exports are processed food products, soybeans & soybean meal, dairy products, feed & feed grains, and fresh & processed vegetables.

The majority of principal operators of Michigan farms are male; however, 7,406 Michigan farms list themselves as having female principal operators.

Exports help boost farm prices and income, while also supporting over 22,600 Michigan jobs both on and off the farm in food processing, storage, and transportation.

Every $1 in export activity generates another $2.93 in economic activity, meaning Michigan’s total agriculture exports of $2.8 billion have a local impact of an additional $8.2 billion.

Why the fuck are we selling China ANY of our food? This whole argument of theirs is one big circle jerk. They sell the pork to China, they grind it up add a bunch of poison and bullshit and ship it back as prepackaged shit on a shingle for ridiculous prices at Walmart

Farmers need to sell to American companies inside the USA where everyone benefits and we have health regulations. Small farms selling healthy organic foods are killing it. Stop bitching and start adapting

Brilliant. Problem is, there isn't enough domestic demand to buy all the product. That's why we export.

Now the farmers are losing orders and can't sell their harvest. So bailouts.

What if I told you.....
China owns farms and orchards right here in America.
As does Saudi Arabia.
They don’t pay tariffs to grow here, hell, I’d be surprised if they even have to pay property taxes the way these county commissioners are so corrupt.

So you hadn't heard that all the Democrats support Trump's tariffs and trade war and that manufacturing output will increase by almost 50% as a result.

Ohio Farmers React to Increased Tariffs and Possible Chinese Retaliation

[link to spectrumnews1.com (secure)]

Tariffs Hurt the Heartland — the nationwide grassroots campaign against tariffs — in conjunction with the Council of the Great Lakes Region, hosted a town hall this week in Cleveland at the 2019 Great Lakes Economic Forum.

The event featured a discussion with Ohio business owners, manufacturers and farmers on the impact of tariffs on the state’s economy. The conversation came one day after President Trump announced that he will be increasing tariffs substantially this week.

The group released the following statement regarding the tweet announcement that tariffs on $200 billion of goods will increase from 10 to 25% on Friday.

“For 10 months, Americans have been paying the full cost of the trade war, not China. To be clear, tariffs are taxes that Americans pay, and this sudden increase with little notice will only punish U.S farmers, businesses and consumers,” Tariffs Hurt the Heartland said in the statement. “If the President follows through on this threat, the consequences will be dire. Raising tariffs to 25% could cost nearly one million American jobs, according to recent estimates. This decision will also roil financial markets and increase the likelihood of retaliation on American farmers who are facing the lowest income levels in years.”
