Quoting: Polkahonkus I chose a Quaker college. The only thing I’m going to do with a gun is euthanize a woodchuck the cleanest fastest and most humane way possible. I feel a little bad about it because a crossbow is a fascinating tool and I’d rather have that but the purpose of a weapon is to euthanize woodchucks humanely. Someone told me to use “twenty two hollow point” bullets. Im not going to take up hunting or find a lot of things to do with a gun. It’s for euthanizing destructive wild animals caught in cages. Very close range. I want a cheap gun but not so cheap Im fumbling with a screwdriver, instructions and warranty with an injured animal screaming in a cage. What’s a nice basic frugal farmhouse kitchen gun? 22 will do it, but 22 mag would be nice one-up. 223 would be the ultimate choice If you have the extra money, now-a-days they have some huge pellet rifles - if I recall 45 to 50 cal. |

What’s a nice basic frugal farmhouse kitchen gun? A used Ruger 10/22 would be my first choice, second would be an HNR Pardner 20 gauge shotgun. I think the shotgun is more versatile plus you can get insert barrels for 22 caliber so you can shoot both out of 1 gun. The downside is the range will be about half that of the rifle. Plus, the rifle you can silence so that's a benny too. Now, about that woodchuck. That 22 will do the job but unless it's a solid heart/lung shot, it's going to keep on moving and bleed out someplace, best use hollow points too. What ever you decide to get, if you want to dispatch anything in a human manner, best you become an expert at shooting it. One shot, one kill kind of expert. |

Use hi-velocity .22LR will wreck the receiver as expected. Even with a cheap scope you can put every round in an inch round bulls-eye at 30 yards. |

Quoting: beenthere 70898461 You can also use not only 22LongRifle but also .22Short--which is much quieter and will kill a ground hog in a cage just as easily. .22 LR can kill coyotes at 50-75 yards if you can hit them--or a wild pig at 30 yds if you shoot him in the ear canal Last Edited by MarPep on 05/18/2019 12:59 AM _______________ They let me off with a warning and a couple of bullet holes. |
