The vaccine involves VLPs (virus-like particles) that eliminated the Tau tangles in mice. The article(s) also states the "vaccine that could prevent the formation of the tau tangles" and thus be preventive. The mice who were treated showed marked improvement in cognitive abilities compared to those untreated. . This is very interesting particularly for anyone who has seen Alzheimer's patients. The problem is that murine studies have a long history of failure upon ramping up to human studies. IIRC the rate is something like 1-2% of murine studies translate to humans well. So don't get your hopes up too high, but this is still hopeful. . The immune system is working even in the absence of an infection by an outside agent. Think about cancer... You are constantly developing cancerous/mutated cells that the immune system recognizes as imperfect and foreign and destroys - no outside agent required. . This vaccine is basically a protein shell with some of the proteins/peptides of the Tau protein expressed (attached) on the surface which are then recognized as "invaders" stimulating the immune system to destroy the Tau proteins. . Whether this will work in humans remains to be seen. R. It has been suspected for a long time that there is bacterial involvement in alzheimer's. You can create an immune boosting autogenous vaccine but that would be too expensive as it would be on a case by case basis.
