(OP) User ID: 76388104 United States 06/22/2019 07:16 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A film producer from Massachusetts accidentally drowned this week while scuba diving in a Montana lake during a video shoot for John Mues, prospective U.S. Senate candidate. Mues tried to help 40-year-old Jesse Hubbell before Hubbell went under Monday. The men were filming a video for Mues, a Navy veteran with diving experience, who is considering running against Republican U.S. Sen. Steve Daines in next year's election. Both Mues and Hubbell were in water at least 60 feet (15 meters) deep, while two other members of the film crew and Mues' wife were in a nearby boat. Divers searched Canyon Ferry Lake for two days before finding Hubbell's body Wednesday. [link to www.yahoo.com (secure)] |

These are interesting: * I may be wrong, but I'm guessing that the cold temperatures plus the elevation of the lake (3700 ft above sea level) may have contributed. I once went scuba diving in Lake Tahoe and only went about 20 ft deep for 20 minutes or so, but it is the one and only time that I went scuba diving and felt terrible for a few hours afterward which made me think I was experiencing a bit of the bends. Tahoe is at around 6700 ft and the difference between the air pressure at that altitude and the water pressure is a much bigger difference than at sea level. I never went scuba diving again in a mountain lake. * Thermocline. I dove with wetsuit there and suddenly found myself below the point where the water temp drops very sharply. I almost lost consciousness and became confused. But did come back up once I realized what had happened. I would not dive there again. It's too risky. I have made 100s of dives in "warm" ocean water. They don't teach you this in dive schools on the coasts. * Note to all you coastal and warm-water divers: most of these lakes out here are glacial lakes, or they are exposed to severe low temperatures for 8 months out of the year. They may be 65 degrees near the surface, but you'll freeze quickly if you dive 50 feet this time of year. We are still having our mountain winters. Quoting: Underwater Engineer 77148692 You're probably correct. Every article I've read said that it's not known how much diving experience Hubbell had. "Monday Hubbell disappeared in water that was at least 30 feet deep and it took two days of searching to locate him. A thermal drone from iFlyBigSky, an aerial photography company, and trained dogs were used in the search for his body, which was recovered Tuesday afternoon." Clearly they didn’t have a good protocol to in place to monitor divers, and it would seem they were unprepared to deal with a missing/injured diver. These are the first things figured out before a commercially certified diver ever hits the water. Plus there is always a rescue diver on stand-by, ready to respond within minutes (or less) of being needed. |
