I wept, hearing this song again. I wept for the America that was, that I knew when this train was still running, and for that America which will never will be again.

I’m very old. I remember trains being pulled by steam locomotives, then the beautiful General Motors diesels as in the video, with both engines and cars colorfully painted and spotlessly clean, inside and out. I remember like it was yesterday riding on these trains as a young child, and later young man; my father and myself in suit and tie, my mother in her best dress and the other passengers similarly attired. There was an air of optimism that pervaded the country then, and a level of courtesy, respect and decency towards others that has since vanished along with these trains.

Maybe it’s best that they have vanished, as my mother and father have, and as I soon will. The vast majority of the current generations of Americans - and I use that appelation most advisedly - do not merit them in the least, and would not know what to do with them if they possessed them.

As to New Orleans back when ex and me were living for a summer on the gulf coast.. we wanted to spend a weekend in New Orleans and both our cars got wrecked by the newspaper lady who ran into both cars... so we never got there.
