Etna volcano (Italy): eruption from New SE crater

On 19 May at 12:12 local time INGVvulcani recorded strombolian explosions from the New Southeast Crater, which quickly become stronger and generated a dense dark ash plume. The plumes were dispersed towards the northeast direction.
At 11:20 local time an increase of volcanic tremor has been recorded which was located beneath the New SE Crater at approx. 2,900 m altitude.
Ground deformation shows no significant impulsive variations associated with the ongoing activity.

Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Buenos Aires recorded explosive activity from the active crater with near-constant ash emissions that reached 24,000 ft (7,300 m) altitude and drifted E.
The Instituto Geofísico del Perú (IGP) recorded during 11-17 May 2020 413 volcano-tectonic earthquakes associated with magma rising. Additionally recorded 12 explosions at regular intervals per day...

Lahars (mud flows) could also occur if heavy rainfalls remobilise the fresh ash deposits, but are not expected to threaten inhabited areas.
The warning bulletin states that ballistic impacts of volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows could affect an area of about 12 km distance from the crater...

"Forty years ago, Mount St. Helens erupted in southwest Washington killing 57 people in one of the most destructive volcanic eruptions in U.S. history.

At 8:32 a.m. on May 18, 1980, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake hit and within minutes the volcano’s north flank collapsed, creating the largest landslide in recorded history, according to the US Geological Survey.

That landslide triggered powerful explosions that sent ash, steam, rocks and volcanic gas upward and outward. The lateral blast scorched and flattened about 230 square miles of dense forest, blanketing the area in hot debris.

Within 15 minutes, a plume of volcanic ash rose over 80,000 feet. Over the next few days, winds blew the 520 million tons of ash east across the U.S. causing complete darkness 250 miles away in Spokane. The ash circled the globe in 15 days.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions reached to a 324 tonnes/day.

Etna volcano (Sicily, Italy): explosions from two craters

INGV recorded explosions due to ongoing strombolian activity from the summit craters.
Today at 06:05 local time an eruption at New Southeast Crater generated an ash plume, which reached approx. 14,700 ft (4,500 m) altitude and drifted SW.
Explosive activity also continues at Voragine crater. Increasingly ash plumes were dispersed near the summit.
Seismicity remained elevated including periods of increased amplitude tremor located beneath the New SE Crater.
Ground deformation shows no significant impulsive variations associated with the ongoing activity.
