User ID: 76967772 United States 07/30/2019 11:16 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "The classic Hangouts On Air streaming experience is going away on August 1, 2019. For quick streaming, try YouTube.com/webcam" Quoting: Astroshill [link to support.google.com (secure)] Google's process of shutting down all products related to Google+ is continuing. Hangouts on Air is the latest product to be shut down and will come to an end this Thursday. YouTube offers direct webcam streaming as an alternative, but this does not allow the full functionality of Hangouts. Hangouts allowed groups of people to host group discussions on air, something the webcam or direct streaming features do not directly support. The hangout system certainly has more than its share of bugs and problems, most notably its vulnerability to "stream sniping." The hangout system allows you to share your screen, a feature I personally used extensively back in the day to share live images from my telescope (I now use OBS to stream to YouTube directly and mitigate the threat of stream sniping). If the host accidentally shows the Hangout window on their computer and a sniper pauses it at that point, they can copy the url visible at the top of the window to break into the hangout and even kick the panelists off of their own hangout. Once kicked, that account cannot rejoin the hangout to take back control. They can then continue to stream whatever they want, effectively hijacking the channel hosting the hangout (at least until the hangout would time out a couple minutes after the host had been kicked). Many trolls have used this trick to deliberately stream pornography after first kicking the host out of the hangout so that they can't even stop it, then they report the video to YouTube in an attempt to get the host banned from YouTube. This vulnerability has been known about for years and Google has not lifted a finger to correct the issue. [link to climateviewer.com (secure)] Disturbingly, it should be noted that Google's official response to the bug reports at the time was that it was an "intended feature." So basically, they wanted the ability for trolls to hijack and stream porn on any channel if the owner accidentally showed the Hangout link. A handy way to discredit and ban any dissenting voices that prove too inconvenient. Now years later after most channels know to avoid showing the hangout link accidentally, the final solution from Google seems to be to shut down the feature altogether. Later tonight I plan to have a Hangout on Air, a last hurrah to a once useful (and dangerous) feature of the platform. I plan to send out invitations to a few select conspiracy theorists who have made claims over the last few years that my footage is just CGI fakery. We'll see if they're willing to show up and back up their accusations live, on my last ever Google Hangout. What time tonight Astro? |

(OP) Senior Forum Moderator 07/30/2019 01:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It's true! Quoting: LilMiss My Hangouts got invaded by porn crap from people I do not know, and I cannot stop them from posting. So, I no longer use Hangouts. Darn, was nice while it lasted. Yup, once the URL leaks out anyone can join and you can't stop them. They can even remove you from the hangout and there's nothing you can do to prevent it. The only defense is just to be careful to never show the hangout window or give away the URL or join link to any untrusted parties. When I do a hangout tonight and send the link to a couple flat earthers I'm taking a serious risk they'll just porn bomb my stream and kick me out of it. If that happens it would be a fitting end to the hangout system debacle though. It's amazing that one of the world's largest tech companies, Google, couldn't figure out how to patch their group webcast software for the entire six years of its existence. Six years. The straightforward conclusion is that it was never fixed because they didn't want to fix it. How hard would it have been to enable the host to block any additional people from joining, and maybe, just maybe, add a credentials check before allowing accounts to kick and ban people from the hangout? You know, so that a random joining troll can't kick the host while they stream porn? |

What’s your channel? Given your posts, I’d love to hear you at length. I was wondering too -- would love to check it out. I'm sorry that happened to you, LilMis. My 13-year-old daughter is a YT'er (over 111k subs) and does live streams, but Daddy and I monitor and control stuff from two other computers throughout. Thankfully what you described never happened to us, or I'd freak out with her very young fan base. There's always someone out there mucking it up for everyone. (OP) Senior Forum Moderator 07/30/2019 02:22 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I use WebEx. Members from here and other like minded will all hangout for an hour or so, some turn on Cams, some don't. Quoting: WyatteSmith The nice part is I can control who gets invited. . Yeah, there are alternatives out there, some free, most not, but it would have been nice if Google had just fixed their own damn application. It was always basic, but if they had just patched it, it would have been fine for most of us. It's all I used for webcasting here on GLP for years until I migrated over to OBS. Google never seems to properly support its own products. |
