The valley is one of the Earth's largest calderas, measuring about 20 miles (32 km) long (east-west), 11 miles (18 km) wide (north-south), and up to 3,000 feet (910 m) deep. Quoting: Goofy for God Long Valley was formed 760,000 years ago when a supervolcanic eruption released very hot ash that later cooled to form the Bishop tuff that is common to the area. The eruption emptied the magma chamber under the area to the point of collapse. The second phase of the eruption released pyroclastic flows that burned and buried thousands of square miles. Ash from this eruption blanketed much of the western part of what is now the United States. Per the regulations then in effect the town of Mammoth and the Mammoth Ski Resort should actually have been evacuated, but they were not. The movie "Dante's Peak" was loosely based upon some of the real events that happened at and around Mammoth during that time period, but of course the real mountain did NOT blow up. There were some people who died during that time ... they got overwhelmed by the gasses seeping out of the ground and suffocated. In fact they closed off parts of the ski areas for that reason, and prevented some people from going to their cabins in the woods around there, it was too dangerous. Sleeping on the ground in a tent could also kill you (and I think it did kill 2 to 6 people), so that was strongly discouraged. At the present time I have NOT read anything about a huge amount of gas seeping out of the ground in that immediate area or just down the road in the Mono Lakes area. As a result I wouldn't be too worried about that area wrt the caldera, at least this week. |

Many people sold their winter homes and condos fearing an eruption, but it never happened. There's no doubt it's an active caldera. I've backpacked the area around Mammoth and fished all the lakes. There's faults you can walk into, Devils Postpile, bubbling gas pools and geothermal vents coming right up into the river. That said...none of that means it's ready to erupt.
