Mammoth Lake Part of Earth's Largest Calderas, Is Awake
Long Valley Caldera is a depression in eastern California that is adjacent to Mammoth Mountain. The valley is one of the Earth's largest calderas, measuring about 20 miles (32 km) long (east-west), 11 miles (18 km) wide (north-south), and up to 3,000 feet (910 m) deep.

Long Valley was formed 760,000 years ago when a supervolcanic eruption released very hot ash that later cooled to form the Bishop tuff that is common to the area. The eruption emptied the magma chamber under the area to the point of collapse. The second phase of the eruption released pyroclastic flows that burned and buried thousands of square miles. Ash from this eruption blanketed much of the western part of what is now the United States.

Re: Mammoth Lake Part of Earth's Largest Calderas, Is Awake
Back in the 80's or early 90's there was a HUGE amount of gas leaking from the ground under that caldera.

Per the regulations then in effect the town of Mammoth and the Mammoth Ski Resort should actually have been evacuated, but they were not.

The movie "Dante's Peak" was loosely based upon some of the real events that happened at and around Mammoth during that time period, but of course the real mountain did NOT blow up.

There were some people who died during that time ... they got overwhelmed by the gasses seeping out of the ground and suffocated. In fact they closed off parts of the ski areas for that reason, and prevented some people from going to their cabins in the woods around there, it was too dangerous. Sleeping on the ground in a tent could also kill you (and I think it did kill 2 to 6 people), so that was strongly discouraged.

At the present time I have NOT read anything about a huge amount of gas seeping out of the ground in that immediate area or just down the road in the Mono Lakes area. As a result I wouldn't be too worried about that area wrt the caldera, at least this week.

Both cycles appear to correlate with well-known cycles of solar activity; the phasing is such that the frequency of volcanic eruptions increases (decreases) slightly around the times of solar minimum (maximum). The weak quasi-biennial solar cycle is not obviously seen in the eruption data, nor are the two slow lunar tidal cycles of 8.85 and 18.6 years

Just saw all the trees started dying in 1990s

In the 1990s, large numbers of trees on the flanks of Mammoth Mountain near Horseshoe Lake began to die because large amounts of carbon dioxide were seeping from the volcano to the surface through the soil.

The dead trees now cover 170 acres and are less than two miles from where the accident occurred.

“Tree roots aren’t tolerant of CO2,” Hill said.

3 Ski Patrol members apparently were killed in 2006 when they got overwhelmed by gasses in part of the Mammoth Mountain ski complex area as they were transiting through an area.

Danger lurks at Mammoth ... but nothing is happening at the moment to indicate that it is close to any sort of eruption.

Now if the AMERICAN PEOPLE could wake the fuq up and take our nation back to a Constitutional Republic. Reinstate all our Rights-not privileges-but RIGHTS, Almighty God's Natural Rights codified within the Bill of Rights of our Constitution.

That is the reason why NO MAN (meaning HUMAN, you leftist fuqs) can take away ANY of our Rights.

The updated assessment finds that 161 U.S. volcanoes pose potential threats to American lives and property, eight fewer than in 2005. The eighteen very highest threat volcanoes are in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington. Thirty-nine other volcanoes are high threat, 49 are moderate, 34 are low, and 21 are very low threat.

That was also the same time there were strong quakes on Mammoth Mnt itself. Many people sold their winter homes and condos fearing an eruption, but it never happened.

There's no doubt it's an active caldera. I've backpacked the area around Mammoth and fished all the lakes. There's faults you can walk into, Devils Postpile, bubbling gas pools and geothermal vents coming right up into the river.

That said...none of that means it's ready to erupt.
