Have you considered the possibility that the second dentist was mistaken and the first dentist was correct?

Did you ask the first dentist what makes him think you need a root canal?

The whole root canal issue can lead to heart disease.

no. The second dentist has been doing this for 40 years and she said they do root canals at her office too.

yes she said my xrays but they took the x ray from an angle, not front forward. I'm going to pick them up today and see what she thinks she saw.

Re: my now former dentist tried to scam a root canal out of me!
i don't see where the scam is. he has to remove the nerves
and all the tissue inside a decayed drill-out molar before he caps it.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76809044

the scam is how quickly they go for it.

to me, they devitalized the root with a sort of metal bullet leached in a nerve killing substance...without telling me.

I had no pain so the infection couldn't be serious.

went to another dentist to get it further cleaned to treat the supposed infection and they told me the previous dentist killed the root.

at that point I had no other otion than remove it as I cannot have a root canal.

had one, almost killed me, ruined my life for 5 years.

and yet all the dentists were so retarded to tell me it wasnt the root canal. Remove it 80% of symptoms went away in few days. I had to fucking scream at them to get more xrays after 4 dentist failed to see I had multiple granulomas around the root canal.

so full of shit.

Remember, dentist are just nothing more then mechanics. They no fucking idea of what they are doing outside remove parts and place new ones.

get more x rays from more angles.

if there is an infection they can drill and clean, check thr nerve if they go so far, put medicament and close it temporary. After a week or so you check it again, clean etc. If the infection is calming down and nerve is not compromized they can cap it with a biocompatible material and then close it.

I just called my new dentist to have my records sent over to their office so I don't have to go in there and look threatening to them.

I'll let my new office decide what to do with my teeth next. So far nothing needing to be done is good news to me.

Re: my now former dentist tried to scam a root canal out of me!
If its a tooth in the cosmetic area (first 4-6 in the front) either top or bottom, it makes sense to at least try a root canal, however for other teeth its just BS because they do and will fail eventually and just turn into a money pit.

If it is in the cosmetic area weight up an implant vs the cost of 2 x Root Canal treatments because likely you will need a second.

Might be a case of them seeing a problem, in which case a canal treatment would give the tooth more lifespan - Get a second opinion if you are unsure.

Generally speaking when it comes to front teeth because of the visual impact, dentists tend to be over cautious because it effects the patient more if that tooth is lost.

Re: my now former dentist tried to scam a root canal out of me!
Look, it's really easy to prove whether you need a root canal, or not.

Make the dentist who claims this prove it to you.

Tell the dentist to get his electronic pulp tester out.

If he doesn't have one, tell him to fuck off.

If he does have one. Have him demonstrate how it works on a normal tooth.

If you don't feel the electric current on the tooth he claims need a root canal, he's right.

Not all teeth that need root canals are in pain, or have EVER been in pain.

Sometimes trauma from long ago kills the nerve in a tooth over time.

Good luck!

I had an xray done and there is nothing wrong with it.

I'm not going back to that dentist, I already know they were lying.

Re: my now former dentist tried to scam a root canal out of me!
what the hell! I went in yesterday for a routine cleaning and all of a sudden they tell me I need a root canal done on one of my front teeth. I didn't believe them. I have no pain, no nothing, no graying of the tooth, absolutely no reason to believe this is true. The dentist told me I needed to come in today to have it done or my body can get an infection from it and I could die.

I went to get a second opinion at a dentist that accepts emergency appointments and they said I didn't need a root canal.

I just can't believe they even tried this. This is horrible, I wanted to cry when I found out they lied to me.

Re: my now former dentist tried to scam a root canal out of me!
Root canals are bad.

Pull the tooth, get cosmetics.

You do NOT want to run the risk of getting Trigeminal Neuralgia!

Here’s a good description
[link to www.robertjfleming.com (secure)] (Not promoting this guy, just offering description)

WHAT IS TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA?
Trigeminal neuralgia is a disorder of the trigeminal nerve that most often causes extreme pain in the jaw, lips, nose, chin and/or face. Many dental malpractice victims are diagnosed with this condition when they have suffered a traumatic dental nerve injury which is hard to pinpoint. In other words, the medical provider knows that you have suffered an injury somewhere in the dental nerve system, but does not know exactly which nerve has been injured. In fact, almost all cases of trigeminal neuralgia are caused by trauma—most often from a dental procedure that was not performed correctly. However, it is imperative to know which nerve (i.e., which branch) within the trigeminal nerve system is actually injured in order to be able to move forward with a plan for relief and, hopefully, relief and recovery. Knowing your dental history and identifying recent dental procedures that were conducted in the area of the injured nerve usually helps your doctor make a more specific (and more helpful) nerve injury diagnosis. Many of these types of nerve injuries occur in the mandible (lower jaw) although the signs and symptoms that you suffer from may not necessarily be limited to this area. This is because these nerves innervate many other parts of your face and head.

COMMON TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA SYMPTOMS
Trigeminal neuralgia is among the most painful and frustrating conditions known to man. Touching the face, extreme cold or heat, or even gentle air currents can trigger intense pain in the face, jaw, lips and chin. In other cases, no external trigger is needed to trigger this intense pain. In still other cases, the pain is similar to a migraine on top of a stabbing pain. Therefore, it disrupts one’s way of life since it can be set off by routine activities performed in one’s day-to-day life or by nothing at all. Flair ups of trigeminal neuralgia nerve pain and the fear of triggering an attack can be debilitating to those suffering from this condition. To make matters worse, a lot of trigeminal nerve injuries result in pain and numbness at the same time. This can be very frustrating and can wear on even the strongest of people.

RESULTING TRIGEMINAL NEUROPATHIC PAIN
Trigeminal neuropathic pain is a condition that occurs when one or more branches of the trigeminal nerve are injured. It results from a nerve injury following a dental procedure and other facial injuries. The pain is usually constant and commonly accompanied by a burning or crawling sensation. A loss of feeling on the face, especially in the chin and jaw, or forehead has also been documented among sufferers. This is known as concomitant symptoms in the medical community and anesthesia dolorosa in the dental community. Anesthesia Dolorosa (literal translation, “painful numbness”) is one of the most dreaded complications of a trigeminal neuralgia nerve injury and it most often occurs when the nerve is damaged during a dental procedure, resulting in numbness in the face, with pain present within the numb area.

WHAT CAUSES TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA?
Trigeminal neuralgia frequently occurs during root canal procedures resulting in an over extension of a file or overfill of root canal material beyond the apex of the root. It can also occur following extraction of teeth, during the administration of local anesthesia (commonly referred to as novocaine), or following other dental procedures such as the installation of a dental implant in the lower jaw, deep cleanings or orthognathic surgery.

Re: my now former dentist tried to scam a root canal out of me!
I've had at least 10 root canals. Many have been at my own urging, as I know very well what can happen when a cracked tooth can strike the nerve, the pulp getting infected and lead to an abscess. Many stories each year of the abscess in the upper gum regions, that can lead to brain damage and even death.

Last December, I was told I had a cavity and decay under a crown. The dentist, she said she'd have to take old crown off and drill out the cavity, and she may come to close to the nerves. I said if that is the case, let's do a root canal. She said, let's wait to see how it goes and that after putting a temporary on, if I had no sensitivity, we'd go ahead and put a new permanent crown on.

Actually the most painful "test" often done is to put an electric current on the tooth to check if the tooth is alive or dead. If the pulp/nerve is dead, you will not feel it-- hence you will need a root canal. If it is alive, you will almost jump out of the seat. To me that is worse than the whole root canal process.

So not all dentists are money grubbers and out to hurt one's health, and/or pocketbook.

I've read all the internet stories of how root canals can be bad for one's health. I have not had any negative side effects. However, I do believe that all amalgam (the silver) fillings were bad. I think I finally have all the amalgam out and replaced with porcelain.

She sounds like a Sadist.

I had a Dentist say he couldn't figure out which tooth had the exposed nerve--so he pulled them both.

No root canals--they never get all the bacteria out--and it just seals it in and causes all kinds of stealth medical problems. I got mine all taken out and have not had to worry since. (And never have to see another dentist)

Gynecologists in less educated places like Indiana do a lot of unnecessary hysterectomy.

Local lab tech induces cancer scare over nothing and doc offers two surgical options— although I suspect he offers uneducated women only the one that pays best.

Local women talk like it’s just a normal part of life to have a cancer scare requiring surgery. “All that taken out.”

These innocent patients are sexually mutilated and maimed forever. In old age their other insides are all bunched up because of the missing uterus

Local doctors do that to the sweetest most affectionate and trusting naive people you’d ever care to meet. The doctors of my youth would be outraged. Doctors from other countries are visibly angered.

I had the same thing happen to me a couple years back with a new dentist

I went in for a second opinion same day to another guy and was told I definitely don’t need a root canal, i was just likely grinding my teeth, and needed a mouth guard.

I went in for a third opinion a day later to my old dentist and was told i just needed a softer tooth brush...but that the mouth guard wasn’t a bad idea.
