Anonymous Coward User ID: 77821531 United States 10/19/2019 09:43 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | booted up my reliable refurbished hp proBook and Windows operating system said "no support after january 2020" so I clicked on the "read more" and it told me not only was Windows 7 going to stop giving virus et al updates, but I needed a whole new computer. AND my microsoft office suite would probably not transfer to the new pc/op system, so I would have to buy that too. But don't worry, it claimed, because pc's are soooo much cheaper now. And wanted me to click on a list of "under $600" pc's. I paid $300 for this one. F--- Me! I have mcafee for virus, so maybe they'll keep updating? Quoting: Woodsie Install a SSD 240gb hd they run about 40$ Download Linux or buy a disk off ebay. Throw windows drive in the incinerator. Problem solved. |

Quoting: CK Dexter Haven They took the best OS ever and royally jacked it up, taking away the users control, and right to privacy. As for end of Windows 7 support, it can't come soon enough. I haven't allowed any updates on my Window 7 or 8 systems since April 2016 when they betrayed their longtime loyal customers and demonstrated that they cannot be trusted. They're still running tip top, safe and secure. I'm not worried about missing their endless cat and mouse game patches to prevent local privilege escalation. Shit, I run most of my systems in admin mode anyway... And yes, your third party antivirus software will still update and support Windows 7. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 76710705 United States 10/19/2019 09:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Luckily I have a very knowledgeable relative to advise me. If there is no way to keep my files, I will stop putting anything important into a digital format. FOREVER. I had several years and hundreds of hours of important audio work lost when a platform decided to redo everything to "improve" word searching the audios, and "don't worry, we'll tranfer everything to the upgrade". Not going to continue to waste my time, energy, and money for things that are used against me, or so if they don't like what is said, my work can be conveniently "lost" to benefit these money-grubbing, global-controlling corrupt a--hats. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 75267886 United States 10/19/2019 09:54 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | On any phone, pc, tablet, etc...disable updates, online check ins, etc upon purchase. Disable all the crapware youll never use or didnt install yourself. Windows should be cut off from sending in info to their home base servers. Thats how the software and os is constantly dinging to you to install an update, or telling you that something will expire. Windows 10 sucks cuz they have sooooo many processes running and they are all connected to the net to send out your data and retrieval of the latest "features" that "enhance" security and your computer eventually stops working...most just buy a new pc altogether at that point. Always backup and store everything on a separate hard drive and keep the local drive for os only just in case that bullshit ever happens. Its a smart habit and youll never lose anything if you ever get locked out or os corrupt. |

If the files are important to you, you should at least be backing them up on some kind of external storage. |

Not necessarily. A dual core CPU on a laptop made around 2013 is more than adequate. Upgrade the Ram and install an SSD. Dont buy a new laptop to browse the web. Most the ones they sell now are complete junk. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 74124188 United States 10/19/2019 11:11 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Get an older laptop that has an external HDD port and you can swap them out in about 1 minute after reboot. If you have a desktop just install both drives and boot from the menu option each time you want either. Really simple stuff. |
