any windows 7 users here? Whatchya gonna do?
booted up my reliable refurbished hp proBook and Windows operating system said "no support after january 2020" so I clicked on the "read more" and it told me not only was Windows 7 going to stop giving virus et al updates, but I needed a whole new computer. AND my microsoft office suite would probably not transfer to the new pc/op system, so I would have to buy that too. But don't worry, it claimed, because pc's are soooo much cheaper now. And wanted me to click on a list of "under $600" pc's. I paid $300 for this one. F--- Me! I have mcafee for virus, so maybe they'll keep updating?

My comments from a windows 10 thread yesterday.

Microsoft has really screwed the pooch.

They took the best OS ever and royally jacked it up, taking away the users control, and right to privacy.

As for end of Windows 7 support, it can't come soon enough. I haven't allowed any updates on my Window 7 or 8 systems since April 2016 when they betrayed their longtime loyal customers and demonstrated that they cannot be trusted. They're still running tip top, safe and secure.

I'm not worried about missing their endless cat and mouse game patches to prevent local privilege escalation. Shit, I run most of my systems in admin mode anyway...

And yes, your third party antivirus software will still update and support Windows 7.

If you want to transfer everything to windows 10 purchase lap-link and let it transfer almost every thing. Check it out at there web site. Then all you need is a windows 10 key.

Luckily I have a very knowledgeable relative to advise me. If there is no way to keep my files, I will stop putting anything important into a digital format. FOREVER. I had several years and hundreds of hours of important audio work lost when a platform decided to redo everything to "improve" word searching the audios, and "don't worry, we'll tranfer everything to the upgrade". Not going to continue to waste my time, energy, and money for things that are used against me, or so if they don't like what is said, my work can be conveniently "lost" to benefit these money-grubbing, global-controlling corrupt a--hats.

Bro...

On any phone, pc, tablet, etc...disable updates, online check ins, etc upon purchase. Disable all the crapware youll never use or didnt install yourself.

Windows should be cut off from sending in info to their home base servers. Thats how the software and os is constantly dinging to you to install an update, or telling you that something will expire.

Windows 10 sucks cuz they have sooooo many processes running and they are all connected to the net to send out your data and retrieval of the latest "features" that "enhance" security and your computer eventually stops working...most just buy a new pc altogether at that point.

Always backup and store everything on a separate hard drive and keep the local drive for os only just in case that bullshit ever happens. Its a smart habit and youll never lose anything if you ever get locked out or os corrupt.

Or you could just keep your files on an external storage device. A flash drive, memory card, or external hard drive.

If the files are important to you, you should at least be backing them up on some kind of external storage.

Extended support for Windows XP ended on April 8, 2014, I ran XP til 2018.

The reason I updated to win7 is the browsers were starting to have problems

so we can probably run win7 til 2025

don't be a pussee, "no support" doesn't mean shit

Windows 7 works just fine for me. I use third party malware, virus and Internet protection suites.

W7 was the best Windows ever made, and I will continue to use it.

Re: any windows 7 users here? Whatchya gonna do?
I am one of those pesky older people who helped implement this stuff for the benefit of enhanced information, communication, and commerce, so it's very hard sometimes to envision how things are done today, or what the trajectory of planning the future of systems and networks will be. I still read word menus for example, rather than trying to figure out what the small and ambiguous icons mean. If I could drag and drop a file into a list on an exterior drive, I'd still do that, but I swear every program has some little chaos to confuse what should be simple and obvious. I did back up some of my "lost on server after upgrade" work, thankfully, but who knows if I'll be able to play any of it when the playback-designing people decide those formats are passe. This planned obsolescence goes way way back. My books, albums, DVDs and tapes are still here, and so far, can still be used. So tired of throwing $$$ down a hole and piling obsolete equipment in a corner because no one wants that material in a landfill.

Turned off all updates from day 1. Never a problem with my computers when I do that. If I allow updates, they are fucked within 3 years or so.

Maybe that big collection center out in Utah could charge a $100.00 monthly fee to access their extensive databases for public use since no data is ever lost for those guys. ;)

Not necessarily. A dual core CPU on a laptop made around 2013 is more than adequate. Upgrade the Ram and install an SSD. Dont buy a new laptop to browse the web. Most the ones they sell now are complete junk.

For people that need to play games buy two SSD. Literally spend like 80$ and a few hours of work and you got yourself Windows 10 for JUST GAMES and LINUX MINT for all your other needs.

Get an older laptop that has an external HDD port and you can swap them out in about 1 minute after reboot.

If you have a desktop just install both drives and boot from the menu option each time you want either. Really simple stuff.
