What is the mental mechanism that makes people double down on stupid?

I've made some incredibly stupid mistakes; normally I am very aware.

I feel like the stupid mistakes were invasive thoughts.

There's definitely some level of self deception going on.

If you've ever gambled with a group of people, you'll see the "mechanism" up close & personal. Many years ago I ran a dice game with friends, & learned a lot about this very thing.

When people are ahead, they get over-confident & almost always keep pushing till they lose it all. When they've lost it all, they delude themselves into thinking they can recover from it by doing more of the same.

It's a compulsion that shows you how freakin insane many people are. I never gamble anymore in games of chance because seeing it in others made me fear getting caught in that same trap. I do gamble in business but that's different - I'm betting on myself & my abilities. But never dice, cards, sports, horses, racing cars, etc.

Yes, it's ego.

With a smorgasbord of false narratives for people to self-indulge. Must be less work to pick a side and say "sure it is" than to take a step back and detach from the non-sense. Perhaps the fear of not being on a side is too much

Yeah, I can see how compulsion and desperation play together a little too well.

Make sense.

Picking a side is probably easier than thinking, having to assert oneself, and - god help them - occasionally having to go against the flow.

It's insecurity, in my opinion. I've always learned more from my mistakes than my successes. I'm not "pleased" when I err, but I'm willing to own it. Because what I "do" is not who I "am".

Some folks think they ARE what they DO so any error, if admitted, reduces their sense of identity and self-esteem.

There are many but the notion of "confirmation bias" fits.

It is faulty inductive reasoning that interprets all new data in ways that reinforce existing biases or errors in thought and judgment.

Yeah. I can see how insecurity would play a major role. The fear of looking like a failure, so they end up looking like a mega failure instead.

Never could get into that show.

Maybe inflated egos are a coping mechanism that develops as a result of living in a world of questionable advice and bad products.

When you can't build anything real, the only thing left to build is an inflated and unjustified sense of self worth.

One does have to be confident to be wearing a mess on their face while telling people it doesn't exist.

Endure crimes commit none . Live how you wish with confidence if this is so

I think we need to move past the era of enduring crimes, and move into the era of not putting up with their shit if we ever want to move forward and not eternally backward.
