Considering switching to Linux. Don't like Windows 8 or 10 and the newer Mac OS and hardware are no good for me.

Most of the linux distros seem to gravitate to firefox. I have Mint with brave installed. There is a .deb install file for brave.

Just dual boot. That way, you still have windows lingering around if you have the need.

Or, you can always just boot linux from a thumbdrive.

there's also the open source version, Chromium, which doesn't track you as severely.

Re: Switch to Linux
You have the wrong attitude, their is no perfect os. You have to hack it yourself. If you have win10 spend a lot of time removing everything you don't need. The subsystem is great, but you have to go through and remove every service you are not using.

Same with OS X, cut out all the bs, and tweak it. They are great OS's underneath, both have superior versions of unix underneath.

Linux I find great for simple tasks, its a pain in the ass to get it running like OS X or Win, even if you are using virtual machines.

In the end what ever you decide the secret is getting it to work for you, what do you use it for? then Minimize! cut out all the shit that is not needed.

Google Chrome is the only variant of Chromium that has hardware acceleration on any os. Any other web browser also wont be able to run YouTube with hardware acceleration without some hacks.

Video Editing options
 Quoting: A_Dappano

That's where you're going to run into trouble, at least when it comes to Pro offerings. However, just looking it up now, Davinci Resolve is apparently available for Linux, and that will easily be your best bet for video editing. The free version will suffice for 90% of your editing needs.

Otherwise, good luck. I made the switch years ago on most of my systems and never looked back.

Mint is probably the easiest to use.

The entire Linuxsphere is incredible.

I would Youtube how to reconfigure your start up and bios to boot off a usb stick.

You can run pretty much any linux flavor off a usb .iso image of the operating system.

Good idea to create a dual boot scenario where by you can allocate a certain percentage of your hard drive space to a linux OS but still keep win10 running in the background.

Keeping win10 is a good idea until you see the full benefit of linux which is that they aren't tracking your every key stroke.

Ubuntu is an option but they are going full commercial, no thanks.

Every person who runs a certain linux distro(flavor) loves that flavor.

They're all pretty much the same until you get into the very arcane.

I suggest Mint simply because it's so easy to get your feet wet with linux.

Been using Mint for about 10 yrs with zero problems and zero malware!

Mint for me.

This!!!

I know I'll get roasted for saying this, but win10 is the best OS MS has ever put out. It's smooth, fast, and refined. Some basic tuning will make it even better.

And I once swore off windows for Linux.

Totally second that suggestion. I've "converted" a few people over the years, and I always start them with Mint first. Most have never switched away from it.

Stay away from Gentoo and any of the BSDs unless you WANT a serious crash course in operating system technical design. Not that it's a bad thing (I love my custom FBSD boxes), but they aren't ideal for first-time Linux users.

Instead of dualboot -- use Linux Mint, then install and use Oracle VM virtual box then install win 7 on it! It's awesome and you don't need to install any win10 spyware. Open VM on the rare times you need Win to run some program.

I've found only a very few programs force one to use Windows nowadays....Linux has been taking leaps and bounds in the software/app dept.
