Rather than "pre treat" which almost never works, it's better to simply get up an hour or two ahead of time and tackle it AFTER the precip is done. We're getting ice tonight and about a foot of snow tomorrow. It ends tomorrow evening. I'll get at it Sunday morning bright and early. Hoping I don't wake up to a sheet of ice. I live out in the country and its difficult to get in and out with ice. When the conditions are like that.....you should stay the fuck home.....just isn't worth it... Certainly will. But asking for advice. What do country folk do to prepare their driveways for ice and snow? Country folk don't have concrete slabs except for maybe patios or pole barns. |

When the ground is still above freezing - not worried to salt - the rain/sleet/snow will melt When the ground is already frozen - salt can help in paved areas to keep ice from forming In like just cheap Halite - but use special paw safe mix if you have pets walking in the salted areas |

Country folk have gravel driveways that drain well - and 4-Wheel Drive! We only salt the sidewalk and walkway - move the hot cars over ice spots to melt if they get thick - Must use a snowblower or plow to remove slush and snow before it hardens up like concrete if it goes down below 20 F Radiant heated driveways would be over $10,000!!!! Forget that! |

What do country folk do to prepare their driveways for ice and snow? If its raining it'll just wash the salt off. and you will have pissed away your money. "Wisconinite" here:THERE IS NO "PRE-TREATMENT" FOR SNOW & ICE. You scrape off the snow: use an ice melter (salt or otherchemical)on icey spots. hopefully some direct sunlight will heat the uncovered black asphalt and clean it up for a while. If you put salt down BEFORE IT SNOWS: it will melt the first bit of snow into a slurry. If the salt concentration is not high enough it will just freeze THE WET SLURRY into a sheet of ice. |
